BMW will be all over SAIC very soon over design infringement, if it's s not BMW, then Fiat might have something to say as I see MiTo in the front from the lights up.
Pretty sure you can't copywright having a white roof and round headlights. It looks nothing like a mini or a mito. What it looks like is 100% horrid! Pretty sure if they dropped the awkward looking MGB grill and went with something that complimented the rest of the design it would look much better.

What a vile looking thing, makes the Nissan Juke look beautiful, Nissan can make ugly cars because they made the Sunny, but MG can't as they are supposed to be stylish and sporty which this isn't. Well it looks like a Nissan Juke crossed with a MINI Countryman crossed with a MGB GT, horrid looking thing. If they made a retro sports coupe/convertible to look like a MGB/GT then I would have no problem with that as it would look great, but an SUV to look like a MGB GT is sort of taking the ****. If they made the SUV look like the 5 for example I would have no problem with that.

Seeing those pictures has made me a little sick in my mouth, Not even the designers at Mini have tripped that far on acid as to come up with such an abomination.
The only good thing is by the time they actually get round to launching the model, it will look nothing like that.

I am sure they can dig up an old Ssangyong that looks nearly as crap as that and save themselves a load of effort.

Ann you sum up this up beautifully.

Land Rover with its squashed Evoque, Nissan with its marmite Juke and even the MINI, which derided many purists upon introduction are examples of tapping into markets, even if the latter was a market Rover should have had! Cues from this concept could allow MG to have a little effort in doing this as well.

I don't like SUVs much so wouldn't buy one but most certainly like the release of the concept vision in attracting opinion. Part and parcel of what car manufacturers should be doing along with their key models.

I undertook some detailed market research - I asked my teenage daughter. Her view?

'Really cool - although the front bumper looks a bit space age...'

So it'll sell. Bring it on. And if they can use some of those cues for a new MGB and say a new MG 1100 then they'd get my vote. Well done Tony.

Has Tony been facelifted, he looks very smart launching the MG5:

Talking of the MGB, I see it features in the MG5 launch, maybe that is where the headlights come from. Does it have the 4WD from the Metro?

Told you the ICON was purely a concept

Yes, I agree. I love the headlamps and the front wing shape too. We're probably not recessarily expected to 'love' all of it in the one show car entity - but if this tells us about some of the 'iconic' features that SAIC Design value, then this could be a wonderful prelude to an interesting chapter coming... so long as it isn't too far down the road.

I think it looks absolutely vile - the worst MG design I've seen yet from SAIC.

On a plus side if it ever sees the light of day it'll never look like this - the front bumper I'm sure wouldn't be allowed with those horrid looking fog or indicator lights sticking out, there's no panel split between bumper and side wing and China likes 4 door vehicles. The front door would need to be shortened to make it 4 door and the door couldn't be part of the wheel arch either as the side rear shows on this. Also SAIC like cars with pillars and frames around the door windows.

They should concentrate on improving current/upcoming products that will make it to market rather than show boating with ridiculous sketches that'll never be seen on our roads.

As a designer (of the graphic variety) I like it. Some (most?) of you might actively dislike it, but I think it's far preferable to the pseudo-Asian blandness of the MG3, 5 and 6.

It's just as polarising a design as the Juke, and Nissan doesn't seem to be having any trouble shifting those by the tens of thousands. Polarising design is always memorable, even if its memorable for the wrong reasons. A production version of this, even a considerably toned down one, would certainly get people's attention and start them talking about the MG brand in the UK.

If they can sell as many as NIssan do then I'm all for it TBH! We might not like it, but the Quasimodo and Puke are appealing to a considerable number of people prepared to pay over the odds for them! Same with the Countryman too.

In a way, a few tweaks and nips and it could be quite a cool machine, then they really would be able to play on the MG heritige and keep a straight face in the process.

It's not what I expected that's for sure, but I actually quite like it. MG should be applauded for referencing their past with the vehicle (something the new gen cars don't do) and for targeting the car as a sector which is developing in popularity. As has been pointed out already, the Juke has been a huge success and there are several manufacturers imminently joining the compact crossover market in its wake.

Go on MG - put it in to production. I dare you!
