For any owners who havent yet replaced their MG6 gear knob, I would recommend you do so.

I have read on many occasions owners complaining of knotchy gear change, or difficulty changing gear

I know in some cases MG Motor have sanctioned the newer 'heavier' gear knob replacement from dealer

I have never had any issues changing gear, but always feels clumpy as I move the gear leaver, with a horrible plasticy sound as the gear is selected

I wanted to test the theory that a weighted gear knob would improve the gear change, so I bought a cheapy heavy duty aluminium gear knob from eBay. Fitted it yesterday. OMG what a difference. Smooth, slick gear change with no noise.

The nasty plastic gear knob I removed is hollow, with no weight what so ever.

Now I have proved for my self a heavy gear knob improves gear change I will order a more expensive quality item

No imput from Brouwer please!

Not the best looking, but it works! Only cost ÂŁ5.20

Yes you could. I did think about putting some lead air gun pellets in there, but I bought the cheap one from eBay. Havent weighed the old one. It is very light. The new l
one is 200g. I will order a quality 300g weighted knob

Who has had them replaced under warranty as im trying to eek that out of my dealer at the moment - the change is horrbendous and is getting better.
A few owners over on the MG 6 3 5 Register had them replaced under warranty. Think little chicken on here had his replaced

That was my thoughts exactly. This is why I bought a cheapy heavy duty gear knob to experiment.

It was my daughters Fiance who said a weighted gear knob will make gear selection smoother. You dont require as much pressure to change gear. He always fits 400g+ gear knobs that he makes him self to his drift cars

He is in University studying this stuff to become a Nascar Technician hopefully

I have one of the new gear knobs on my car. As an estimate it is about four times the weight of the original. The original knob assembly seems very light and plastically compared to the new one.
I was very sceptical and could not see how a heavier knob could make any difference.

But it does.

The first thing I noticed was when I rested my hand on the knob all the previous vibration was no longer there.
First thing in the morning when I change up into second the crunch has now all but disappeared.
All the changes up and down are now very smooth.

But my wife says that she feels no difference.

I can only surmise that the extra weight of the knob effectively damps out the previous slight crunching.

On my 13 plate GT I have the newer gear knob and it does feel a lot nicer than my previous 6's plasticky one. Gear change is perfect and no vibration at all. However at one year old the chrome ring looks horrible, it's all worn. I wonder if it's worth putting some chrome cleaner on it as if u keep adding it and rubbing hard then you can remove a layer of the chrome. Don't know if it would work.
