Why are all R65's so resistant going into gears?

Infact, thinking about it, they are not all like it - as my old 1996 and 1999 Rover 214's where absolutely fine. The last 200 I had - a 1998 216SLI was a little resistant getting in to certain gears, but it was high mileage (121k) and the clutch was on its way out.

However, this year 2000 Rover 25 I have picked up for my girlfriend has done less than 60k miles (59k) and it is sometimes resistant going into gears. It has been like it since I picked it up with 57k miles on the clock. It has the usual reverse gear selection 'trait' where you have to lift the clutch up slightly for it to engage (something a lot of R65's do) but also sometimes refuses to go into first gear when stationary - have to put into neatrul, lift off clutch and try again. Whilst driving it is ok, but seems a bit resistant going in to all gears.

It cant be the clutch with just 59k on the clock, can it?

Would a gearbox oil change help?

I've got a new clutch and gearbox oil on mine and it's still a bit clunky going into 1st and reverse. Unless you put it in neutral, foot completely off the clutch, then clutch down and put it into gear.

It's called personality I think! Haha.

What is this, and how do I check it?

I just noticed that the cable wasn't secured in the plastic clip properly (where it secures it and stops it from coming into contact with the gear selector) and kept slipping out. I have tried to bend the plastic and re-seated the cable. I doubt this will make any differance - but I'll soon tell as I am going to work soon.

I think it's the addition of a small plastic doodad (sink plug is ideal, slit halfway through from edge to middle) to take up the slack in the clutch cable. On top of the box you'll see a blue plastic bit, pull it back and insert the plug.

My 216 is fine regarding all gear selections, nice and weighty shift - does jump out of third occasionally so not all roses, it's on just under 130K miles.

Where the clutch cable comes through the bulkhead you will see a spring which is the self adjuster, pull the spring back and release a couple of times as they are prone to sticking making gear selection stiffer.

I keep meaning to do this mod too, but i doubt anyones R65 can be worse than mine. Since I killed the last one on the last Dyno Day, the replacement one wasn't too bad for about....... say half an hour, then it started showing the usual faff, trying to push it into practically any gear.

I'll eventually get some pennies to just get a PG1 and be done with it :)

Think i've ****ered my r65 this evening.

Wasn't going in gear earlier... got a bit aggressive... and now its really having some issues.

Took me like 2 minutes to get it in reverse, its popped out of first, reverse and fifth on the 4 mile drive home... And finding 1, 3, 5 and reverse has just been continual hell for the whole drive.

as above, you probably bent a gearlinkage rod.
