What are peoples' views on the comparison? While folk on here love their MG Rovers, they do see to be reasonably objective when it comes to comparing them with other cars.

Are the ST24's more reliable than the MG's?

The ST24 is a bit old now, but still not bad, however it was superceded by the ST220, and that is not a bad package tbh. At nearly 220bhp and sub 6 second 0-60 and topping out at around 150mph, not bad for a repmobile. SVT also did a trick job in the handling dept, but at the end of the day. The ZS180, in my opinion, is a better package and is more of a drivers car, even with less hp. The ST220 is most likely the better car if it is refinement and comfort you favour more.

can only add that I have experience of Mk1 and Mk2 180s and have never been let down.

Although I have driven a Mondeo, it was 10 years ago and it was not a performance version. So for me it would come down to personal preference on the interior, local servicing, insurance, things like that.

Oh yes, and getting a Post-It to cover over the badge. A car called ST? :yikes: does that get through the swear filter?

I've got both. ST24 is better for seating 4 adults. ZS has better feel interior. ST24 makes silly "moose" noise when you start up. ZS handles much better and is more responsive. ST24 has **** turn-in but will hold corners if you have the faith. I could probably match myself in both cars, but in a straight fight the ZS would win as speed is much easier in ZS. ST24 engine is a lovely lump, but heavy and slow. ZS engine feels a little bit fragile, but is a lot more entertaining. Both have been reliable, but ST has needed a new alternator (which is a ******* job as you have to remove the entire car to get to it). Both drink petrol at frightening rate.

I find the Mondeo a very rare car. However, I did see two of them on the way to, and back from, the shops today. (whilst I was looking hard for Mondeos!) They share a similar aesthetic with the modern Mercs (e.g. the one used as a safety car for Formula One) and the Mk2 ZS 180, not to mention the latest Renault saloons. Therefore there must be similar-looking VWs (Passats) and Skodas.

It struck me, if you could get a powerful engine into the long modern Mondeo estate, what kind of car would you then have? (other than one that wouldn't fit into my garage)...could be a marvellous combination!
