I was the unfortunate victim of a house burglary the other night and amongst the items stolen were my MG ZT car keys (plus the spares) and also my pride and joy car!Having spent yesterday licking my wounds and feeling very sorry for myself I have just been informed that the car has now been recovered and is in a police pound awaiting a visit from the forensic people. I am unsure of any damage but the guy who rang me seemes to think it was ok(fingers crossed). My problem now is that I have no keys to start the car with, so can someone please advise as to the quickest/easiest way of getting a replacement set?I realise that this may have been covered elsewhere but as you may appreciate the burglary has turned my world upside down and yesterday I was simply unable to move as I was so numb, so I apologise if this is putting you out a little.many thanks in advance, slim timBy the way its an MG-ZTcdi saloon on an 04 plate if it helps?

this is an orrible can of worms mate cos without keys you are going to have to go to a former rover place who still deals in our cars and have them order from germany , you also need to have the old key codes erased from the ecu or they will just nick it again. The replacements must be coded by T 4 , so all in all you are gonna lash out dosh and have to wait for a while for this all to be done , police pound charges will mount up so moving it by car lift is a must . A new key would take about 10 days and would need the car to be hooked up to the dealer computer to code the car to the key. Cost about ÂŁ160 per key. Possible insurance claim ??

Takes a long time cos the dealer has to get the key from Germany although a call to X PArt themselves could be useful to confirm this as I seem to remember reading that X Part were getting more involved in the key issue thing. Could be wrong though.

Looks like a trailer job to get the car from the pound to the dealer.

Take your log book along to an x part centre today. You will need the vin number to order the key. The key will unlock and start your car, but you will need to get it coded on a T4 to be able to unlock the doors and boot with the blip. The insurance will cover the cost, along with the storage cost at police pound!

a used lockset and key.immobilizer ecu and engine ecu. probably no more than ÂŁ200 would solve the problem. and your old keys would not fit/work. so any returning theiving scumbag would not be able to nick it again. but as said in previous posts. the insurance should cover it, but ideally the lockset needs changing and not just a replacement key.

Hi,

Sorry to hear your bad news!

Had a similar thing happen to me at the back end of March. The car was recovered the next day and the insurance company sent it off to a Fait garage for repair. Bearing in mind the car needed a new lock set and two new programed keys some 16 weeks later they have told me the car is finally ready for pick-up.

They initially wasted 4 weeks by not going to BMW for replacement lockset and keys (yes you may be able to source them elseware but it was an insurance claim) although I advised them to. When they got the parts and thier electical experts attempted to fit them they found that the car would not start. Solution new ECU, BCU & transponder ring. Yet another 4 weeks passed, then got word from them that the car was ready. But get this it had a error code showing up on message centre but it woiuld be alright because 'Rover said it would be OK', I think not I said!
They then wasted another 4 weeks waiting for a e-mail from 'Rover/X-part that would assure me that it would be allright to use the car they eventally got the message that I would not accept the car! Finally they got in touch with BMW main dealer who ran a diagnostic check and advised them that the keys did not marry up with the new equipment they had fitted in fact they had buggered the keys up! So yet another set of keys were ordered and programmed, so hopefully when I pick it up on Saturday every thing works!

Sorry about this long winded message but no the wonder insurance premiums are so high and insurers are so keen to write off perfectly sound cars.

Moral of story being take notice of real experts on this forum and if at all posible attempt to convice your insurance company that the best people to repair these cars are those who have a past track record!

Spot on and a shame you suffered from the problems you described far to many ÂŁ80 an hour professionals out there that flounder when presented with a different make of car!

Spot on and the best way to go about it plip coding can wait preferably till both keys are available

Especially if the insurance will pay for a lock set and replacment EWS ECU as well

Look for a safe place for the spare key...with. the car!

I always keep my spare key with the car.
Not inside of course but outside at an easy accessible location.

For example ( and only as an example) in one of the headlamps accessible by a locking plate in the wheelarches ( meant to an easy exchange of the bulbs)

there are lots of other possibilities and a thief will not waste time trying to find it.
also very usefull if you have lost your key far from home...

A quick update....I have the car back with surprisingly few problems.I only have one set of keys which means the theives still have the other set. Xpart have quoted me ÂŁ405 for a new set from Germany and then I have to get someone to fit at further cost.My clutch smells!! Clearly in the short time they had the car they kicked the hell out of it and now I get a burning smell when idling, this I have had checked out and my Rover dealer tells me it is the clutch, although the clutch does not slip and seems to be working fine.My locking wheel nut key is missing.Again my xpart dealer helped, all I did was quote the code still in the original documentation and they have ordered one. It does not look anything like the ones mentioned elsewhere in this forum (numbers 11 and 12?) but is the shape of a six leaf clover thing. Nobody I have taken it to recognise it and xpart say it is the new one for the facelift model, something I have not encountered on here.I shall post a picture if required.Insurance want me to take it to some approved garage but I dont see the point as they are NOt Rover/MG experts. Thanks to all for the help.

Hi Slimtim,

Word of caution, do not use your car, lock it in a garage or get it into your insurance companies approved garage! Someone out there potentially still has access to your car and if anything happen's you have given your insurance company a complete get out or at the best you could end up with two claims running and so two lots of excess charges to pay!

I eventually was told my car was ready for pick-up last Saturday after 16 weeks had a very similar experience to you. Low and behold my nice cream coloured leather seats were covered with oil so back again this week after leather valet.

When the car was recovered the spare set was in the car, the original 'master' set was not. This means at least I could get the car home.
The ideal for me I suppose would be to get the current key re-programmed so that only this key and NOT the old one can start the car.Not sure if this is possible though.

There isn't a 'Master' key for the 75/ZT, they all work the same, so the key you have works the same (or should) as the missing one.
The key cannot be re-programmed, it is the car that recognises they key, the missing key should be able to be deleted from the system by an ex Rover dealer on T4.

No it is not a copy, each key is individual and has an immobiliser chip and the remote control for the alarm/central locking, the details of which are different for each key.
The car's immobiliser ECU and BCU are programmed for the authorised keys and both 'know' which key is being used, so the missing key's details can be deleted.
