Had my mg zs excite 1.5 litre around a year and a half now bought brand new and only done 14,000 miles and the clutch has gone, I've had lots of card before new cars that are over ten years old and driven them for years and never had any issues with clutches.

Anybody had any more issues with the clutches?

It seems that the clutch on the cars aren't made very well:

Cheers..

Given that we've got more of these vehicles on the road in the U.K now, I thought that it would be a good idea to start a thread with a list of the known issues that have been plaguing the MG ZS.

Feel free to add more and state if the problem has been rectified by MG or not.

1.5 litre DVVT engine stalling issues - Acknowledged by MG and rectified by the dealer.

Driver's one-touch electric window going down instead of up - Acknowledged by MG, repairs carried out by the dealer.

Rust issues on white models. No resolution by MG.

1.0 litre TGI engine PPF issues. No resolution by MG.

Loud harmonic whining noises in the gearbox when either reversing or moving off in 1st gear - Acknowledged by MG as a characteristic of the car.

Loud clonking noises when turning the full lock in the steering.

The Clutch in the manual model is very jerky. Sometimes an attempt to resolve this is carried out by dealers.

Cheers.
MY MG ZS Exclusive has lost its touchscreen that controls many programmes including the Handfree Phone GPS. Apparently its a common issue. I've had the car 4 months and done 1500miles. NO the software update DIDN'T solve it!

It has to go back to MG.

DONT BUY AN MG ZS - THEY DONT WORK!

Hi All, We go tour 24 plate MG ZS Exclusive 1.5 petrol on Tuesday (through Motorbility). Took her (Margot) out Thursdy evening, no problems. Went out today (Saturday) went to Pets At Home for about an hour, then to a cash point and on to local Post Office all fine and dandy. Came out the Post Office a few minutes later, Margot won't go-go, turned the key, she wouldn't start. Battery fine, petrol amount fine, but everytime we turned the key, just the sound before you get the engine to fire/start. Eventually, after the initial panic of how the hell do we ge me (very mobility impaired) all the way home with no car now, we tried one last time and she started like nothing had previously been wrong. Is there any known issue with these cars just "not starting" out the blue. She went from Margot A-Go-Go to Margot Won't Go on only the second thime we'd taken her out. I hope this is something that there is a little tip for.

Hello Everyone! I Had purchased 2021 MG Zs Exclusive 1.0 litre TGI engine Manual Last Week. Does anyone had ever faced issue with selecting 1st gear, when Vehicle is at stand still? I do booked a Service appointment but it has lead time of two weeks. Any response/Suggestion Appriciated!
I thought My 2022 ZS Exclusive 1.0 7000 miles was on fire clouds of smoke coming from back and cockpit full of smoke pulled over in road works where workers ran over telling Me to get out because car was on fire, called AA and was told it was the clutch. Towed Me to MG dealer garage and was told clutch had burned out ie worn and only 12 months warranty so would have to pay ÂŁ1200 plus. Mechanic told Me they no longer deal with MG because of their warranty and the clutch fitted is known to be faulty and not capable of working correctly

Mine did exactly same yesterday. I've had car 4 weeks. Hope it's not going to be a regular thing.

Just received a brand new ZS as a courtesy car, very disappointed to be honest. Looks great on the outside. Drives abysmally, suspension unsettled, gearbox changes gear like an automatic from the 80's, heavy on the fuel for a meagre 1 litre 3 cylinder engine. Also hearing a droning sound from drivers offside rear wheel, parcel shelf retaining clips broken off, originally held with glue ! Overall very poor. #GladIdidntPayForit Sorry for those who have

MG ZS
1.5 Hybrid Trophy 5dr Auto

Went out in a demonstrator yesterday.
In the thinking about it mode at the mo.
Had to shout between occupants front to rear as the wind/road noise was very loud. Certainly on drivers side .
Rear seat passenger was gobsmacked by it.

Is this a known issue with this model ?
Or a one off?
I guess not a lot of info on the net at the mo .
Dealer does have a few in stock.
I wonder ?🤔

There are a few new ZS Hybrid owners on this forum:
Might be worth posting there.

Be outraged if you like but this is my thoughts.

MG is a cheap Chinese car made from cheap materials that simply don’t last well, as with all things Chinese when it goes wrong the manufactures don’t want to know and because they are several thousands of miles away and with very obscure laws there is very little you can do about it.

So the bottom line is buyer beware it’s cheap for a reason, when it’s a few years old and goes seriously wrong its throwaway because it will cost more to fix than the car is worth.

I bought mine in June this year, 6 months old, it's already had a replacement speaker and problems with not starting. It went in and they supposedly fixed the starting problem, they never. Ive just sold it, worst car I've ever had, wouldn't recommend.

Hi Matty We have a 2022 ZS experiencing exactly the same as one of the Known issues as you mention, i.e Loud harmonic whining noise in the gearbox....... So I am glad we found your blog. I couldn't see how this particular issue developed in your thread. Do you have any further background info? Our car is booked into Stoneacre MG tomorrow (30/1/25) Many Thanks

Hi All - got a 69 plate 1ltr auto. It's a cheap, Chinese car as we all know. I should hate every inch of it but for some reason I love it (may be going soft in my old age) - despite the faults. Happy to share what I've been told (don't shoot the messenger please) and issues I've encountered....

  • the whiny noise when pulling away as the car works thru' 1st and 2nd gears etc is allegedly the turbo
  • windscreen glass isn't great; seems to chip easily
  • early models (like mine) don't support Apple AND Android car play, it will be one or the other
  • car sometimes not starting is allegedly a common/known fault and due to a crap connector in the starter motor. I've had the AA out to get me back on the road when it has happened and the chap showed me what to do if it happens again. You have to pop the bonnet and wiggle a wire on the starter motor which is right at the back of the engine, to get it going again. When it happened originally, Stoneacre put a new starter motor in (3 weeks after I bought the car) yet it still happens
  • car now makes a horrendous noise (sounds like a Ferrari or plane taking off) when accelerating. Have had the wheel bearing replaced (did not cure it) and no idea on cause. Querying wheel(s), gearbox and exhaust as next port of calls in fault finding.

And yet, in spite of all that, I do genuinely love this car. Get a lot for what you pay for by comparison but it is still cheap, Chinese bits and pieces. I call mine the Temu Tiguain!

Hope all of that helps and if anyone has any ideas on the noise I'm experiencing, please do let me know.

I have an MG ZS petrol 1L engine. Auto start stopped working, stuck on a busy road. 2 hours later after mechanic had done all he could by the roadside with no result I gave it one last go and it started! Went fine after that although I now turn the auto stop start off.
Since then, on 2 occasions now, car out of gear, clutch in, pushed starter, nothing. About 5 seconds later, foot off clutch, still out of gear, car started without me pushing the starter button.
Crap connector?

Certainly sounds like the "crap connector on the starter motor" known issue. Dealerships won't admit it though!

I have a 2020 MG ZS 1.0 auto bought second hand last August. Last week the yellow engine warning light came on, and I bought an OBD2 reaser to find out what the problem was. It showed it was P2452 particulate filter pressure differential sensor A that was not working. Put it in my local garage, and all he did was to say what I already knew, but he can't get the part to replace it. I tried on google, and no spares firms had any in stock, or many MG ZS parts of any kind. I then called my local MG dealership, and said they needed to know if it was inlet or outlet, but they hadn't got any in stock anyway, and it would take weeks to get any. I'm not impressed, and now regret buying it.
