hello,

Im looking for some advice about buying a 1.8 75. The 1.8 is what im after because of insurance costs and initial purchase cost. I am aware of the HG issue and the various checks for it.
I have seen one example in which the engine seems to rattle a bit on startup from cold. Is this normal or is there a problem?

Are there any other serious issues to look for on these cars?

Thanks for any input

???? What problems. I'd rather have a diesel than a 1.8.

Im looking to around ÂŁ1500. I think Club/SE would be ideal, the connoisseur pushes the insurance up too much (i am 18!)
Im based in central scotland. There are few diesels in my price range, hence the 1.8.

Thanks

Tbh a diesel will cost ÂŁ25 a year less to tax than a 1.8.

A diesel will likely be quicker than a 1.8 if you get the 135BHP.

A diesel will also more likely do 200-400K miles on an original engine and HG.

No cambelt change required for the diesel unlike the petrol which will likely need on as it is best to do it straight away to be on the safe side.

And as daft as it sounds derv is likely cheaper to insure than a 1.8.

Obviously I am a fan of the derv, but if you really wanbt the 1.8 petrol hope you find a good one.

Agree with most of this - there are some good, well looked-after examples out there, which you should seek out.

I may be shot down in flames here but is a diesel really quicker than a 1.8T out of the box? Not saying you're wrong, I've never driven a derv 75 but I'd be surprised.

Petrol has 148bhp, diesel 129.
Petrol does 0-60 in 9.1s, diesel does it in 10.3.
Petrol has top speed of 130mph, diesel has 120.

The petrol is also 100kg lighter but then again the derv lump is highly tune-able and we all know (or have heard) about the benefits of a Ron box...

As far as longevity goes, I imagine the 1.8 simply cannot compete.

And yes the diesel should be cheaper to insure as it's group 10, the 1.8T is group 12.

Yep the OP said a 1.8 no mention of a turbo, and due to wanting a 1.8 for cheap running costs, is unlikely to be looking at the turbo I imagine.

As for top speed I really cannot comment, but on a road (private of course i.e track) I am confident a CDTI is more than capable of matching the top speed of a 1.8 petrol.

As said the 1.8 is 120 against either 116/135 derv equvalents, the main difference with the diesels is both have a turbo. I would imagine that the 116 derv is well matched to the 120 petrol.

We know a member on here who has tweaked his CDTI to nigh on V6 190 standard. (robdrinkwater)

1.8 is insurance group 10 as is the CDTI 1.8T is group 15 so very unlikely the op will be going for a turbo imho.

When you say rattle you will need to describe it better for anyone to help with that. If you mean the engine sounds tappety then this is a trait of the K series engine, that should usually quiten down after 30 secs or so.

If its a louder rattle/vibration inside the car then something is a miss and is more sinister.

Personally, I found the insurance companies tend to want quite a bit more to insure a CDTi rather than a CDT or 1.8. People must not forget that CDTi's are harder to get hold of, and cost more money to buy.

As for people who think the 1.8 isnt any good in a big car like the 75, I can honestly say, it does just fine, and imho, does exceptionally well in town driving. True, everyone likes more power, but it honestly has ample power to get you about, with ease, the power band seems to be constant throughout the rev-range, and the engine does not mind driving at low revs, which makes for less gear changing.

Let's face it, if you are looking for all-out performance, you would be after a ZT, not a 75. If you are looking for luxury, class and decent performance, the 75 is just fine, no matter what lump you choose in it.

The 1.8 in a ZT would just be laughable of course, you would struggle to keep up with most sports saloons in it, thats for sure - deffo one to avoid.

I own a 1.8 ZT and the power is fine for day to day driving.
The engine doesn't rattle on mine at all it's an 04 plate with just over 50k on the clock.

As for MattyC's comment about MGZT's as sport saloon's, what ever the engine other than the V8 the fact is most of them are not really that powerful, as I said above day to day they are great car's and I love mine, and I can easily keep pace with most car's in the outside lane at speeds most would be very disapproving of on here if I wanted to.
The fact is if you really want a car to drive hard on some twisty roads and "challenge" other sport saloon's other than the V8, I believe you are wasting your time with an MG/ Rover. That's just my opinion as i've owned much faster car's including an Impreza STi.
This is not an MG / rover bashing post at all, I love my 1.8 ZT I think it looks great and drives just fine, i'm just being realistic on the car's we all own.

Have to agree. It's a matter of personal taste, and what you want from your car. Some drivers want the sportier looks of a ZT, but don't always want to be in the fast lane, so why pay for higher insurance. I personally, am attracted by the toys and the overtaking power,(No moterways up my way)so the diesel Connie SE suits my needs. Unfortunately, many of us have to be price driven, so although the V8 night be a nice dream, it is just that.

i own a bog standard 1.8. nothing wrong with mine. it cruises happily at 80mph. do you need to go any faster? pulls well in all 5 gears. good on fuel and smooth and powerful.

lets face it, you don't buy a 75 if you want to break the land speed record. just drive and enjoy.
