How the hell did this happen?!

Just to fill you in on the background:

Before I went on holiday at the beginning of August I was having problems with my car. It was juddering when in a high gear at around 1300 rpm, then when you put your foot down it would go crazy and just start juddering more and more.:dunno:
My first thought was the fuel pump as it didn't sound like it was priming properly. The engine light did a mix of staying on solid and flashing (neither that good :().
So after my holiday I took it into my local rover specialist to get it sorted. It turned out it was a valve-train issue, but what was causing it I hear you cry! :D

It was SAND!!!

Now to put this in perspective I live in lincoln, about 50 miles from the coast, and the lady that had the car before me (from new) also lived in lincoln! The only time i have been anywhere near sand is on the .org meet in Hunstanton and even then we were on the cliff!

As you can probably guess, what was happening was the sand had (somehow) got into the engine (past the air filter which baffles me :dunno:) and was causing the valves not to close properly.

To cut a long story short, ÂŁ430 later, the valve seats have been reground, a new mls head gasket fitted (a plus I suppose), a new oil and air filter and everything thoroughly flushed out! and the car drives like new now.

But I am still baffled as to how it happened in the first place!

Ideas welcome!

Cheers.

Clifford. ;)

Very very strange. The garage must be making it up.

Have you recently broken up with a girlfriend? lol Im sure even if someone diddnt like you and wanted to put sand in your engine, they would have to get past the air filter.

:wtf: The organisers of the Hunstanton Convoy 2009 take no resposibility for damages caused by SAND.

Are they sure it wasn't just dust/grit?

I've never heard of anything quite like that before in my life, the air filter will stop sand particles getting into the engine, if it didn't nobody would ever drive to a beach and the residents would have bicycles.

Are you sure that they didn't fob you off and it was a different fault all along?

Get a claim into Ian mate ;) remember, he had me walking for the ice-cream...so I'll testify that Ian poured sand all over your car :)

That is really strange, I am still wondering how I, and my car, managed to survive getting to the main meeting point without being gassed to death by Dave:dunno:

At least you have got it sorted now...just very odd. Of course the sand probably wasn't from the meet...sand can get carried inland from the Sahara for example. Your air filter must not have been seated correctly...that's all I can think of.

Hi, guys, i know the garage didn't fob me off because i saw it myself!, plus my family have been using them for 10 years and its where i bought my car in the first place!

cheers for the responses anyway guys.

Could have been the air filter i suppose.

Guess it will never be solved! :(

She's a gorgeous car, the colour is lush and so clean too. It's a shame about the whopping bill but hopefully it'll be good for quite some time now, it's also nice to have some peace of mind knowing that the HG has been changed.

Here's to the next 43k. :friday:

what air filter do you have?

Just did a quick test with a bit of sand from a kids play pen thing! It sits nicely in the standard filter for a while, but after a bit of shaking it around etc it did find its way through!

Not sure where you found the sand tho :p

Just standard air filter, it may not have been sand but just looked like it, it could have been a fine grit or dirt etc... i suppose :dunno:

It's all fixed now and running lovely :D, next job is the damn parking dents! :cus:
