How many Miles to a Tank?

Hi all,

Just reading that optimax thread made me think. Somebody mentioned getting 350-400 miles to a tank in an F.

I have a TF135 and I get around 300-320 to the tank.... is that good or bad?

I don't think I drive it hard... but that could just be a blatant lie!!

That was me. I have to say it is only on long distance drives (i.e. to visit my folks I drive a round trip of 300 miles on a full tank, and have pushed it to 400 -while sweating in case it ran out).

I can honeslty say that I have never worked out how much I get in town driving but I know it is less (I think i have noticed a very slight difference after getting a panel filter, but I could be imagining it).

I also find that if my tyres are too soft I seem to use more fuel!! Keep them hard (ooeerr)

I suppose if you moved to holland where there are no hills etc, and drove at 56mph you would get a superb MPG, the car would hardly ever get pushed apart from stop/start.

Then again, I don't want to live in Holland.

Where fo manufacturers get their data. Is it done on a rolling road?

Hey there a few members on here from Nederland. I spent quite a bit of time in Holland working. Very relaxed, not very many traffic jams either, with better cycle routes and public transport.

Where else would you get ganja with your coffee and nice ladies in the window?? :D

I think manufactures get their figure from lab tests, but I think they are done on test tracks now. They are a bit more acurate now aswell.

My TF 135 averaged about 34mpg - but that was commuting into Birmingham and back each day.

300-340 I'd say is about right. Certainly Optimax in my experience makes no difference at all. Well, not true - it makes a slightly bigger hole in your wallet.

what's wrong with you guys??

300 miles per tank? Even 330 or even 350?? I regularly get 390 and also 400. Once got 420. And I'm not a slow driver (see other thread about speeding fines). I don't have a regular commute, but when working in London, it involes a good thrash on the m1, followed by stop start into the south bank, doing that 4-5 times week and consumption is almost as good as my "ex". An oil burning Peugeot. The TF 135 has really impressed me on that score. Maybe I'm doing something right at last! What I have found tho' is that if the hood is down mpg drops significantly, I figured out there must be more drag??

420!! You've got to be kidding.
320 yes I can see that's realistic... even 340 If I drive like a good boy. But 420!!

I've done 1800 miles and have started to see the mileage get better, but I can't see myself ever getting 420.

I suppose I do lots of short journeys 14 miles to work, 14 back. That is my daily run accross country so that could have a lot to do with it.

420.... I wish!!

OK. I ran mine nearly dry at the weekend (bottom of the scale for two days) and filled her up to the top (which took about 45 litres). I reset the clock and I am doing a 300 round trip on Thursday (plus already done 36). I bet I can get there and nack and still have a few days twon driving left. I'll keep you posted.

Filled up yesterday - TF 160 49.2 litres, 358 miles. Mostly commuting - mix of B-roads :) and town driving Much with the top down. Do I drive hard - certainly. Have had better with long motorway stints and the hard top on.

Just filled up with 47 litres, and had got 330 miles this time.

Worked out that my work journey is 14 miles there. All B-Roads.

I guess short journeys like that every morning and evening aren't the best way to get good MPG?

OK here is the story.

Filled up last Tuesday - full tank from very empty , about 45 litres

One 300 mile round trip on motorway (average speed about 85mph) and the rest city driving - so far needle has just touched top of red box (i.e. I reckon another 30 miles or so) and mileometer reading exactly 370.

At least therefore, 400 miles per tank.

45 litres = 8.89 miles per litre *4.546 = 40mpg.

Not bad. I am sure I can get more out of it. Is this not better than the manual says?

I'll let you know the finished result(well when I start crapping myself after being at empty for a few days)

Only mods: Cotton Green Air filter, Optimax fuel, short aerial, mud flaps. Pretty sure the last few will have no effect

The manual states MPG for a particulart RON of fuel?

very odd...

Also, the RON number is not representative of how much energy there is in the fuel, just how quick it burns, and how much it compresses.

Theres likely to be the same amount of energy, so you are unlikely to get a different MPG figure.

"Only mods: Cotton Green Air filter, Optimax fuel, short aerial, mud flaps. Pretty sure the last few will have no effect"

I think the Mud flaps should make the MPG less as they will add to the drag especially at 85 :) Of course Mike's Short Aerial will help.

Paul

Also with Mudflaps and short aerial

That's right, it was your mudflaps I copied (I mean based mine on);)

Broon.

I thought the flaps would cause drag too, but perhaps they have some aerodynamic effect? I have no idea. I think the combination of high octane fuel and a better than normal air filter (and living in the Norht of Scotland where the ambient air is always cold!) probably has a positive effect on MPGs.

As we all know speedos regularly show up to 10% higher than the real speed. The official mpg will be on a calibrated set of conditions and will hence 'look' lower.
So if you are getting >400 on a tankfull it might be a bad sign that your speedo is way out of spec.
