As always, DO NOT ATTEMPT this work if you are not competant with the spanners.

Anyway, here goes....a brief how to.....

Take wheel off....

Image

Beat the screws which hold the disc to the hub - this loosens their grip, allowing removal.

Image

Undo screws x 2 using a large cross-head screwdriver and store safely!

Image

Slacken brake pipe union just enough to allow removal with the caliper off the car...

Image

Undo two 15mm headed bolts that secure the caliper to the carrier

Image

Prise the pads apart to allow caliper to be drawn off the disc

Image

With a large hammer, beat the old disc off the hub - these can often be very corroded. Wear goggles to protect your eyes.

Image

Remove brake disc

Image

Clean both hub and mounting surface before fitting new disc, this is important if you are to avoid brake judder in the future

Image

Fit disc, insert and tighten two screws.

Image

Make sure you have the correct caliper - they are sided. Make sure the pads are fully pushed apart.

Image

Fit the caliper, torquing the bolts up.

Image

Clean the mating surface of the hydraulic connection....

Image

Fit the hydraulic connection - do not overtighten! Use new copper seals.

Image

Bleed brakes!

Image

Fit wheel back on.......using a torque wrench, no air tools! :dddc:

Image

The finished job.......looks nice!

and one happy Curgy! :)

I prefer to use an impact screwdriver to remove the small disk locating screws and if available I replace them.

The arrow indicates the normal rotation direction, which is more obvious than pointing the arrow upwards iin whatever location/position the caliper is.

I prefer to use axle stands and(/or) put the wheel under the sill.... if something goes wrong, there's always the wheel.

In a moment of madness, I have purchased an 04 1.6 Spark SE. The saving grace is that it cost me a piddling sum of money.
It has been fitted with uprated AP brakes (red calipers), discs and 16 inch 11 spoke wheels.

We now have a Steptronic F and a Manual TF. I'm considering swapping the larger brakes to my wife's X plate MGF which has 15 inch wheels with standard size discs.

Will the 15 inch wheels accommodate the larger discs?

If they do, apart from swapping the discs/calipers, will it be necessary to swap any of the other 'bits' on the hub if I keep the wheels on the original cars?

Thanks.

The new purchase doesn't have an MOT, but otherwise seems in decent order. It wouldn't engage a gear at first but did so after some persuasion. It then ran well enough, albeit with stiff gears, over a very short distance. It has been sold to me at an unbelievably low price, giving the impression that there might be something seriously wrong with the car (does the gear change issue indicate major problem, or just a sticky mechanism).

If I end up with no alternative other than scrapping it, are the 15" and 16" wheels interchangeable on the smaller discs without affecting the breaking or handling capability?
