Horrible Banging noise when pulling away?

Hey all

On the way shopping earlier today i pulled up to a busy junction, now in order to get anyware you need to be quick pulling out and getting away, normally this isnt a problem, however today as i pulled out, the car started revving and suddenly there was an awfull banging noise from the front drivers side, the whole car jerked and shuddered before suddenly the revs dropped again and the car sped off as normal

Now my first insctinct was the clutch, however i tried a few gear changes at higher revs on the way home and couldnt replicate the same thing, the clutch seems very strong, i checked all the wheels and tyres and they are all bolted on correctly and inflated correctly, so what on earth happened?

Anyone got any ideas?

hmm... didnt check that, though if it was wouldnt it have been blowing all the way home? last time i checked the front section and manifold where all in pretty decent nick, and from the cat back its a vertually new stainless steel job, will have a look tomorrow though when it gets lighter

Sounds like wheel hop to me, did it seem like the dashboard was going to come off? Horrible when it does that, the tyre doesn't wheelspin smoothly, instead it grabs then slips then grabs.

Ahem ;)

My Leon did this until I changed the lower rear engine mount for an uprated one - now it either grips and just goes, or you get smooth wheelspin, no more hopping and banging!

Wheelspin in a front-wheel drive car can certainly behave much like you've described - it depends on many things, including suspension. I discounted it because it's never happened to me in the Rover, but my Fiesta (and another one that I drove sometimes) often did this.

That said, I would say my Fiesta "bounced" more than it "banged", but different cars may present different symptoms.

No one's mentioned clutch contamination yet.... happened to me from my last box before replacing it, this combined with a tacky AP kit resulted in excessive engine movement on take off and took out the top & bottom tie-bar bushes.

but then my ZS is a shed and is falling apart
Not mine anymore, spend some money you tight a*** :)

no thats the banging and squeaking noise coming from the back, im more worried about the banging from the front lol

I checked all the engine mounts and drive shafts and other gubbins today and everything seems intact, pulling out of my junction this morning i tried giving it a bit of welly and the front drivers side wheel did spin, but as mentioned above it didnt spin smoothly, though it did not bang or jump, it just seemed to slip a little then grab, then slip and grab and so on, will try giving it even more welly tomorrow and see what happens

Cheers all
