Has my MAF died?

On the way home this evening, as I accelerated away from an island, the car behaved perfectly normally in 2nd gear, but when I changed to 3rd it was as if i was holding the throttle just enough to keep the car going at a constant speed irrespective of how far I pushed the throttle, and then suddenly it picked up with loads of power. Now the car feels flat as a fart below 2500rpm, and loads of power above that value. Any ideas? The car is a ZS TD with a remap, decat, mafam, and EGR disabled.
Cheers

First question what sort of mileage has the car done????

My first MAF totally died at 32,000 miles, the second one lasted approx another 25,000 miles, i now have a Pieburg one of Ron which works very well and cost a fraction of what a Bosch one will set you back.

My advice is for what one off Ron will cost i would replace what you have got and see what the results are. Tempermental things these MAF's are with a vey short life cycle.

Cheers.

Hmmm?

Another ZS bites the dust in a similar manner to mine. I've replaced the MAF with one of Ron's MAFAM's and a Pierburg and to be honest there is improvement. I have still to tweak it right so it's not all roses.

Will await the outcome of this with some interest. See if it is purely a MAF thing.

Ok thanks for the replies..
The car has covered approx 34K (its had its speedo replaced so I carn't 100% sure on the exact total) and I'm pretty sure that its running the orriginal MAF. When I bought my MAFAM I specifically got the one that would enable me to use the pierburg MAF. When I uplug the MAF will it restore all the low down power, and not allow the engine to rev over 4000rpm? or will there be some reduction in the low down power? Since Matt remapped the ECU the amount of lowdown power was phenomenal...

Odd, odd and more odd! I've been out in the car today, and its running perfectly! not the slightest hint of a flat spot. It pulls strongly up a hill from 40 in top gear. I'll report back if it happens again though...
Cheers for your help guys,

If it was lots of black smoke I'd be looking at the EGR valve first though. The MAF sensor usually makes it run lean (so making it slower). Thats assuming that they've already checked the intercooler hoses for splits.
