Dont the cams in the vans use an infra red flash?? Cos they're often infront so they use a light that wont blind u.. Maybe if people didn't speed as much there wouldn't be as many camera's!!
Speeding is only part of what makes up accidents.

7% the last report that i read. It seems to me, that they go for the easy option.

Or do you think that accidents are caused hy speed alone? If you don't then your point don't seem to have much relevance.

In leicester, i know of 6 cameras that are on dual carriageway type roads that has an artificial low speed limit in place. they are their for safety or to make money.

I don't agree with speeding, but i think there is a place for cameras. Schools etc.

the flash is to do with another reason too.
Try taking a picture of a moving car from behind, from a stand position, the number plate is blurred isn't it? its all to do with the shutter speed of the camera, if the shutter speed is faster then the image is crisper, BUT less light gets in and the image therefore is very dark. The flash on a Gatso, as said, is very intense and therefore supplies sufficient light for the iris of the camera as the shutter speed is very quick.

The average law abiding citizen in this country accept that the police do a good job with limited funds from the government BUT if they continue to place camera's in places which are not black spots and use them to raise revenue then they will lose the support of middle England. I am a retired civil servant, law abiding and hopefully a good citizen but if they carry on as they are they will lose my support as they are fast losing my respect. Speak to any middle age copper and he will be the first to admit that this is happening right now. The sooner the powers that be realise that support and respect is slipping away the better. The last thing Britain needs is the police to lose support from middle England but they are doing their best to achieve this.

Had my say I am now climbing down off my soapbox and going for a pint

Well i could start saying which people i hate...that apparently are the same ones causing the traffic coming to a halt on the M1...but there is no point trying to convince somebody, that his blood pressure increases as the speed of the car exceeds the 30mph. Anyway, this is a bit old but u get my point...I believe now the German rate is even less as things are a bit stricter over there (i ll try to find a recent one).

As it was mentioned earlier, it is a 'manipulation' of statistics blaming everything on speed when an accident happened. I am a true believer that accidents have to do more with driving culture (braking habits, trucks have to overtake slow moving cars, people loose control in wet and dont have a clue about what to do and hit the brakes, a motorway accumulates water when raining, people see u coming but they pull out the junction anyway because the used their indicators etc) and with the inexperience of 'an' average Joe to deal with the unexpected. The 'out of the normal' incident is always going to happen (because it doen't have with how you drive, but with external effects)...if you know how to drive and conditions allow it you will avoid it ...if not you become another case in their statistics.

Enough said...Waking up on a Sunday is always difficult to stay with the mouth shut...

while were on the subject of speed cameras that do everything in catching the poor motorist door a few miles per hour over the limit or even a fair bit over the speed limit where they are no imediate danger, but dont catch people who drive cars while under the influence of drugs and drink and could wipe out people and are breaking the law survierly as soon as they turn the key, or even the people who are driving cars that do not belong to them or that they are not insured on............. (sorry diversing)

anyway can any1 shed sum light on what the hell those things are at the side of the road that look like cameras, they are blue and are on a 15ish foot tall blue post and have a camera type looking thing that they hang off bridges (which im already sceptical of) with two arials on them (one either side). anyone who drives the length of the A19 towards the a1/m1 will know or shud know wot i mean but if ppl have seen simlar things then ull know wot i mean.

end of the day are these speed cameras??

no. they are used to monitor traffic flow in certain areas, especially near motorways. while they have no ability to measure speed, they are watched by humans and if it looks like youre setting any new records, you'll find a patrol car heading your way.. (top gear reckons)
