1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 were R65 until 2003, when the 1.4 and 1.6 switched to IB5 (1.1 was no longer made). 1.8 and diesels are all PG1 gearboxes.

Different ratios and final drives, some are cable some a linkage

 

The exact change point for 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 engines changing from R65 to IB5 gearbox was mid 2003 - up to serial number 720772 will have an R65; from serial number 720773 will have an IB5.

Not sure where the bit about the 1.1 being discontinued came from, but a 25 1.1 was offered right through to the very end of production - in fact the very last Rover 25 (serial number 816135) was a 1.1i in Starlight Silver

Obviously the PG1 used in the 1.8's is different to the ones used in the diesels too. Massively different ratios to account for the million mile different in rev range.

Why do you want to know Dave?

 

The ZR 160 has a PG1 with tweaked ratios doesn't it?
Also the old 200 BRM had a PG1 with a limited slip differential attached

 

Is the gear stick specific to the gear box... Eg.. Do all pg1 boxes have a screw on gear knob with the same thread.. if so can anyone confirm what it is?
