Did MGR ever consider a ZS and ZT coupe?

This thought occured to me a little while ago, when looking at ZS's. I was just looking to see if they had any 3 door/ coupe variants and they don't.

Did they not consider 3 door versions of the ZS/ZT? I think they would have sold really well!

Just wandering, thanks!

What a stunning car that is, seriously!!

I can't believe they didn't put more resources into making coupe versions, especially for the Zed range! Would have sold a lot more cars in coupe form, as I know a lot of people (as well as myself) don't like 4/5 door cars.

It is such a shame they didn't make this :(

A 45 Coupe would have been a lovely car I reckon but sales wouldn't have been sufficient enough to warrant it (not that that usually stopped them, mind!) plus the HHR was priority for replacement so it wouldn't have made sense to build a new bodystyle off a platform with a short life expectency.

The 75 Coupe, on the other hand, was a huge wasted opportunity.

I think they should have had coupe variants for the Z range though, as that is a sporty brand so the coupe would have sold a lot imo as it makes the car look sportier!

So I wonder why they didn't build coupe versions when the original Z's were first released? Not enough money or just simply didn't think it was worth considering?

The 400/ZS just wouldn't have suited a coupe styling IMO.
I think it might have, just like a 3 series BMW. Maybe.

Yeah exactly, would have blown BMW and the likes out of the water!
A Coupe would have fitted in very well but MGR's R&D budget was always tight and I guess developing a new bodyshell wasn't economical. They would have been far better off designing a new bodystyle off the 25 or 75 as they were more competitive and lucrative at the time.
Yeah true, well the 75 coupe would have been amazing if they thought about it then. If only they spent the money on making the 75/ZT coupe earlier instead of wasting what little money they had on the MG SV and the City Rover.....

I agree I think a 45/ZS coupe would have looked great, after all the 200 wedge wasn't meant to be be a coupe but it made a very good looking car in the end.

It would be great if MG made a ZT coupe, maybe they could use the ZT RWD platform to create a MG6 Coupe. :bgrin:

Speaking of the MG7,does anyone know if any western countries will ever see these cars sold ? As mentioned, if I could get the MG7 with the Rover 75 interior Id sign up for one straight away.
From the picture Ive seen out of China, they look pretty good.
There is a company online in China selling the Roewe 750s and MG7s as well as tractors, vans etc.I was hoping SAIC might use their Ssangyong dealership network to sell MG cars over here in Australia but nothing has been heard yet.I see Geely are selling there cheap Great Wall 4wd cars here now.

Something I read somewhere many years ago about some flexibility in the design to allow for a convertible (possibly an in depth Rover article I read which I lost many years ago mentioning things like the the Freelander MPV). Wish I knew more but even if true it would cost too much money to bring to fruition.
