Crashing and parts!

First of all...don't shoot the messenger. :)

I was talking to the manager of the large bodyshop who repairs the our works cars a couple of days ago. One of his blokes was welding an MGTF. Interested, I asked him what it's like getting parts.

He said that it is very, very difficult to get bumpers and body panels. MG badges are impossible. He had to put an old headlamp back into a 25 because he couldn't get the part.

There was a 45 in the yard that had just been wrote off by the insurance company, due to the difficulty in getting parts. The old fella involved had paid ÂŁ6000 for it six months ago. Insurance company were offering him ÂŁ2000 as settlement. :yikes:

And you don't think they'd try the same thing on with a more valuable supposedly 'prestige' car?

Insurance companies always do this - start with the basic trade value. If the punter is stupid enough to accept they're laughing as they'll probably flog the write-off into the trade for ÂŁ2k and get their money back. Sensible punters argue and refuse to accept and soon the insurers will cough up a sensible value or even repair the car.

OK, Ian Robertson IIRC has quoted that Essex police have some Volvos off the road. Why? "They can't get the parts"!! And that's for a car that's made by one of the worlds largest car makers and is a current model!

Just because the (dis)Honest John's in media have made a big thing of MGRs parts problems, don't get the idea that other makes don't have supply problems 'cos they do!

Yes there is its known as the “Close Call” service, if the insurance assessor phones them with the parts required they will send a quote and back to the assessor within 2 working hours. Xpart reckone that they have saved 80% of the cars that would have been written off had they not been put through this service.

I think it's no longer a case of "spares aren't available" they're just, not quite so easily obtainable unless you know where to look. Sadly I think too many people haven't realised that getting parts isn't really a problem as long as your looking in the right place.

Talking to the guy who does all our cars, he says that body parts for early 90's rovers seem to be drying up somewhat (same as any manufacturer), but anything mid 90's onwards is OK. Although he has commented that bits for TF's (body panels mostly) seem to be more awkward than the rest of the late MGR range. He has no problems getting run of the mill stuff, exhausts, alternators, headlights etc and all the usual mechanical bits that bust over time or commonly break.

Although not based on extensive examples, I get the impression that if a firm can't get parts, panels etc from the suppliers they've used for yonks, then they believe they are unobtainable. Several suppliers who have helped me in the past have shrugged their shoulders when asked for some items. I try somewhere else and hey ho, they can supply sometimes off the shelf.

Human nature is suppose.

Some parts are difficult to obtain irrespective of marques involved. Been that way for all the years I've been driving - which started in 1959.

My ex-MG-R dealership now has the Fiat and Nissan. Considering the huge range of models both marques have made over the past few years or so, it would be impossible to be able to supply anything quickly.

In the words of that rather annoying TV advertisement ...

"It doesn't work like that". However, it did once upon a time....

As I went into my now X-part spares counter a short while ago, a rather irate loud mouthed punter told me not to waste my time in their as they're a load of ... sounds like bankers. Apparently, he had been unable to get a part for his Nissan.

No doubt another one of the many who have been brainwashed to believe that only Rovers and MGs ever have such problems. I believe there's an army of such 'ignorants' out there. Who can we blame for that ignorance.... I have no idea.

Got my Z back tonight took seven weeks to get a front wing.
On the plus side the local firm that owned the van that caused the damage paid for it and lent me a hire car with out it going through there insurance.
Could have being scrapped otherwise.
