Breaks juddering on the ice

i have a problem, again with my MG ZR.
it snowed today, and when i break on the ice the breaks judder terrible and the break pedal shudders up my foot. it dosent do this when there is no ice on the road.

any ideas?? could it be somthing as simple as the break pads warpped??

to be totally honest i am absoilutly sick of MG and will never touch them again, in a short period of 6 months i have been through two of them,

the 1st one i had was a 52 reg yellow MG and the gear box changed twice. before some one drove into the back of me and the insurers wrote it off becuase apprently the bumpers are difficult to get hold of.

my current MG is a 54 reg ignition blue and already the locks have broken and started grinding, the horn has stopped workiong i assume the fuse, the car has started to not start up 1st time, i assume starter motor and now the breaks.

the breaks are importnat though and i need to get them fixed, the engine starting il worry about when it enevitably konks out. every one takes the **** saying its a rover!!!!!!!!! i can see why

any help much appreciated

please

Thats the ABS doing its job, no problem there at all mate.

ABS stops the wheels from locking up, the juddering you feel is the system taking off and re-applying the brakes faster than you could, meaning you stop on the ice more effectively.

The bumpers arn't really hard to get hold of to be honest - E-bay or local scrappie / car breakers yard searches on Google can help you out to no end

If you suspect the starter motor then check the earth cable attached to it, these can corrode enough to need a small clean ( worked well for me )

Someone's obviously never owned a car with A.B.S before. Every car with a.b.s will do it not just MG-R. The whole point in a.b.s is it pulsates the piston in the calipers to reduce the risk of locking up and the pulsating of the pistons is what you feel through the pedal

hi all thanks for the quick replys

i have driven card with ABS before, my last mg had it and so does my dads and my girl friends. are you suggestting that Mg abs is differnt to other cars?? becuase ive drven all 3 today and only my Mg is shaking my foot offf the pedal. it feels like ball bearings grinding under my feet? if this is normal it is definitly only normal to mg/rover becuase my dads new astra and my girlfriends 52 reg feista dont do this.

i think its somthing more serious then the abs, what do you think??

No it isnt any different. You said originally it only judders when breaking on ice? If so then you have next to no grip on the ice, so the ABS is gonna kick in straight away, as when you apply the brake the wheel will lock briefly, because there is no friction between the road and your tyres to slow you down, so the ABS repeatedly stops and re applies the breaking so you gradually come to a stop rather than sliding off the road.

If people drove properly they would never know they had ABS fitted unless they had to stop in an emergency.
I regularly get 30K miles from a set of pads and can't remeber when I last had a set or rear shoes fitted.
I dont drive like a sunday driver either, as quick as the next bloke but its all down to forward observation and planning so you brake gentler

I'd put money on your brakes being ok and the abs is kicking in.
Are your tyres inflated to the correct pressure as a few more psi than recommended can also cause the abs to kick in early as there is lestt tyre contact with the road.

ive read the haynes manual, its not pulsatining which is what abs is its juddering through the pedal. the breaks are delayed,
im wondering if its somthing worng with the ABS, which i hope its not becuase i assume that would be more expensive to fix.

but its defitnly not normal. any ideas??

thanks

I wouldnt call it pulsating tbh mate. On my car it rumbles quite violently, I've felt it a few times when I've caught black ice, can be quite un-nerving. The reason the breaks feel delayed is because the ABS is controling the brakes not you, i.e taking off and re-applying the brakes.

Sounds to me with the other issues you've had, this has made you feel that something else has gone wrong. Where as it hasn't. It's a safety feature doing its job.

Don't worry about it, nothing is wrong. :)

Dont forget alot of new cars have other stability systems aswell as ABS, such as Traction Control and ESC. Where as you ZR hasn't.

its difficult to explain, but having driven 3 cars today i can certainly say its differnt, the juddering also goes up through the stearing wheel a little which is what made me think somthings loose.

im not talking a small judder, i mean a harsh grinding judder and im driving really slow to test the breaks, so its not becuase im driving fast

ok i understnad what your saying but even at3-5 miles an hour it is juddering violently. could there be somthing wring with the abs. its certainly more violent then my last MG, the KA i had before and the astra and feista.

it actually feels dangerous?? why would it be going through the sterring wheel,, and also be failing to stopthe car effectivly at all at such slow speeds

Xmas rant

Go and buy yourself a Fiesta then, and learn to drive properly, a dictionary and learn to spell, the amount of ar$eholes, I saw riving and tearing about in the snow & ice today, was unbelievable. I learnt to drive in a car with no ABS, no airbags, no PAS, drum brakes with no servo assistance etc, now I'm not a perfect driver, having had 3 shunts in the past 22 years, however I have covered in excess of 1 MILLION miles!. Now what you are describing is classic ABS operation, my wife's Freelander does it, the Mini Cooper Works, belonging to my mate does it, infact come to think of it, come to think of it how on earth do I manage to drive in terrible conditions of snow and ice, without all the "benefits" that a modern car has to offer? Oh yes cadence braking... UH? wosthatthen? this is what you did in the days of black & white, to prevent pranging your pride & joy.
Merry Christmas
Brian.

in accepting what your saying, would you say that MG abs is more violent then other cars? becuase it does it every time i apply the breaks, and it dosent do it when i drive other cars. and both my dad and girklfriend have driven my car and feel somthing is wrong??

#23 ·
ABS isnt that effective on ice or loose gravel because of the users brake pressure applied, as soon as the abs turns off the wheels lock up again due to no friction between the tyres and the road suface.
You can still skid a car very nicely on ice with abs operational.

Both on my Rover 45 and my dads Ford mondeo, the brake pedal will judder/pulse when the ABS cuts in. However my mums astra doesnt do that, but then im not convinced its got ABS, or if it does maybe its not working......as when I was testing it out it just skids like a normal car without ABS.

yes its definitlly only on ice, and its shudders hard enough to push your foot off the pedal. but only on ice.

no other car ive driven has felt like this, what a reluctor ring?? are these expensive? i really only know the basics of cars, i mean ive changed a gear box before and played around with a starter motor but i dont really have a clue what could go wrong with abs.

is there anything else that can go wrong with abs?? i assume it has an ecu, can this be faulty?
