53 Plate ZS 180 with 41,000 miles and full service history and very rarely thrashed!... I think my kv6 just died.

Was pulling away from some lights and decided to give a bit of whelly and right before I changed into 2nd (didnt redline)... Bang. instant loss of power, smoke from engine _ oil smell and pouring out and what sounded like things clanging around the engine bay.. Engine still running but I had no power but enough to get it off the road and onto the path. I stopped it instantly. just been towed to a friends house. It was too dark to see anything apart from oil pouring out the engine. Whatt do you think? Conrod? big end? top end? .. no point in worrying as its a new engine??

do i laugh or cry!

who really knows? I did the last oil change and it didnt take more than needed, I checked the oil the recomended way, put the dipstic almost down and leave it o settle check again. I checked it 2 or 3 times to be sure but as you know its not exactly a great engine to check the oil on. I would say hand on heart It would have been slightly under full than slightly over.

With the slight possibility it may have been over full what would the diagnosis usually be?

yep, thats how i am feeling, only had it since december, just replaced the inlet manifold 800 miles ago as it was rattling, full xpower ss exhaust 600 miles ago. Only just showed my mate it today and was just saying how lovely it was now driving. its a sad sad day!

If you shop around, you can get an engine for around ÂŁ400.

Im in the process of fitting another Kv6 and honestly, it is not that bad off a job. I have never done anything thing like this before and finding it fairly straight forward.

I might now where you can get an engine. PM me if interested.

hopefully all the noises you have heard and the metallic bangs etc were just the gearbox. 'JUST' the gearbox, lol.
i can't see any engine (even a k!) putting a rod through the block giving it stick in first, and you have even said you didn't give it full whack either.
unless you have a highly tuned turbo'd motor and it is boosting too high etc then a 2.5 kv6 n/a engine shouldn't do anything like that.
as mentioned, it should be the gearbox.
maybe low on gearbox oil (leaked out perhaps) and then a spirited shift into second caused it...?

If it is the gearbox, I can help. I just built one for my 180 with an LSD, but I used the gearing from a different box to get better acceleration. Anyway, I have all the ZS 180 gearing sitting on my bench wanting to go back in a box.

Hi Guys,

well ill soon see, going over to see it just after 9am.. I honnestly dont think its the Gearbox as I dont think I reached the point of shifting brefore bang!, and as I crawled to the side of the road the gears were working fine. Tickover was very lumpy like half the engine was just not working. The oil that started leaking was definately not GB oil as well.

Maybe the clanging noise I heard in my shock was just stones and crap being thrown up by me diving into the central ghost island on the road to stop being taken out by cars accelerating behind me, either that or bits of engine block....

We will see. Im trying to keep an open mind and stay as posative as I can!

Head Gaskets.

My KV6 went the same way, after a set of lights under normal acceleration, lots of smoke, instant loss of power, seemed like gears had gone at the time, but oil had mayonaised, due to Head Gasket Failure.

Problem with refitting another engine is, unless head gakets have been done on the replacement engine, then it's not worth doing, as they can go at any time, better to replace your own. At least you know, how your own engine has been driven.

didnt seem like a HG failed. Ill see, i had 2 HG's fail on my old ZS 120 and this was much more explosive!

Didnt think the KV6 in the later cars had a HG issue. mind you from what I understand they are supposed to be pretty bullet proof, obviously not this one!

Hi mate noticed that you from Nottingham also. Is it a 2.0 engine or a 2.5 cos Langley Mill Rover breakers (phone no. 01773 531363) has got a couple of 2.0 kv6 engines.
My advise is to rip it out and replace it.
Then strip any serviceable parts off the old lump and sell ie inlet manifold, flywheel, heads if not damaged etc

Just got back.. Looks like i have thrown a conrod, maybe two!

So a new engine it is.

not sure if its a repair right now or get something to keep me running around in and worry about it at a later stage. Either way not a good situation.

I have been speaking to a mech and he has quoted me around ÂŁ300 to fit a new engine depending on what state the replacement is. dont sound too bad to me is that about right to you guys??

Very very unusual, bloke at caffyns once told me years ago that they have never ever even heard of a rod failure on a K. Headgaskets and piston slap yes all the time but the bottom end is very tough.

Maybe headgasket leaking water into oil, or oil pump failure etc. led to this?

never touched a drop of coolant, and oil and water have never mixed. coolant bottle is still clean even after the big bang. guess its just one of those things thats got to happen some time due to nothing being immune to everything. Just so happened it was mine.. Lucky me! but at least it didnt let go at 70MPH on the motorway with the wife and kids in the car. going at 25 ish is one thing as I was instantly on the clutch and brakes. 70+ on the motorway in the fast lane or pulling away from a round about in front of a artic and I may not be here to tell you what had happened.

Just got to think myself lucky in one respect.
