Hi all,

I'm just about ready to renew all four tyres on my 2002 R75 2.5 Tourer and I'm in a quandry. In the process of renewal, I'd like to acheive a smoother and quieter ride than my Khumo 225/65/17's deliver. I don't know if this a factor but my wheels are TSW Heat.

I've been pointed in the direction of Bridgestone's RE050 by Kwikfit at ÂŁ420 My local tyre company, Tadworth tyres have Bridgstone RE040 at ÂŁ404 and also Continentals at ÂŁ460. I've also looked at Black Circles own Interstate Sport IXT (Extra Load) at ÂŁ240 or the Nexen N3000 at ÂŁ207.

Now my heart says Continental or Bridgstone but my pocket's shouting Nexen.

Has anyone any experience or opinion on budget verses mainstream tyres and what would you recomend

Thought hankook were classed as cheap budget tyres aswell.

Conti's are soft wearing so dont expect great milage, but grip well.

Toyo's seem to be pretty good.

Pirellis seem to be better milage than contis.

If they do a BF Goodrich in your size worth a look, part of Michellin group but a lot cheaper, had these on a calibra years ago and got really good milage and grip.

I fitted Nexen tyres to my 2000 R75 about two months ago, and although I was a bit doubtful at first I took the advice of the tyre fitter ( not one of the big ones but our local one who has been established for 100 years ) and I am very pleased with them. They are made by Yokohama, and give a ride and grip at least equal to the Pirelli P6000's, for just over half the price. They cost ÂŁ200 including fitting, new valves and balancing.
As a point of interest I have been driving for over 40 years so have had a fair few tyres fitted in this time but no-one has ever pointed out the "Treadwear number" on the tyres until I had the last lot fitted. The higher the number the more mileage you should get. The Pirelli's were 185, I think, but the Nexen are over 400, so sould give a lot more miles. I got about 25,000 on the Pirelli's.
I also have an LPG converted MG ZS 120 + ( the Rover is also LPG fuelled) and it is fitted with Pirelli Run Flats, because of the lack of a spare and being the other halfs car. They have done about 11,000 miles and will need replacing in a couple of thousand miles. Their treadwear number is also 185.
I could'nt believe it when the garage told me this when it was serviced, so I took the car back to where I had them fitted in case they were faulty, but they were'nt, and the guy there said that you were lucky to get 15,000 miles from most tyres these days, so go for the Nexen !!
