wrong size exhaust

Hello guys,

I had a big rattle under my car yesterday and the exhaust back box had broken with rust so I phoned the garage and they ordered a back box and fitted it today.

Car runs smooth and all but I noticed when I got home that the exhaust is short and doesn't come out from behind the bumper. I have to look under the car too see it and it looks really crappy.

How can I go about this, will the garage have to sort this out for me? I just wanted to know where I stand.

Thanks

exhaust

sounds like you have an exhaust for a rover 45 or the ngzs 1.6. both these came from the factory with no bumper heat shield fitted so there is no cut out in the rar bumper, hence the exhaust stops short of the bumper.
couple of things to find out,
what engine is your zs ?
does you bumper have the cut out with heat shield ?
if its a 1.8 or 2.5 then the correct exhaust should be showing and therefore they have supplied the incorrect back box.
if its a 1.6 and you asked for a 1.6 exhaust then it is corect type for standard car. but even if someone has fitted a heat sield, cut bumper and fitted a different box before you had the car common sense would be to fit the longer type exhaust, if the garage was unsure they should have asked before fitting. the only problem you have is you should not have taken the casr from there if you were not happy.
let us know your details and go from there, cheers Bren

oh sorry...

Mine is a zs 120 mk2 saloon with a cut out space for the exhaust with heat shield. The previous exhaust was sticking out slightly...

The guy said to bring it in the morning as I phoned him straight away and told him I've just noticed it and am not happy.

Thanks Bren

i forgot to ask if it was a saloon lol
as above they have fitted a hatch on your saloon which explains your problem, the hatch back box is short due to the saloon having a longer rear bumper.
main thing is they are sorting it for yor, result.
cheers Bren
Lol, well on the phone he said I'll have a look at it for you but they may try to fob me off, but I hope they sort it bud

They'll have to sort it as technically its dangerous in the condition its in now.
Really? well I do hope so

in what way would it be dangerous ?

The exhaust doesn't exit the bodywork (it is designed to) and there is a vent into the car in that region. It is convievable that exhaust fumes could enter the car and asphixiate the driver.

Ok this is quite unlikely but if you need any ammo to persuade the garage to sort it that will work. If they refuse, take the car to trading standards as they'll agree and throw the book at them.

There are different back boxes for the ZS/45. Mk1 and Mk2 are different for a start as the rear bumper on the mk2 is bigger. Then there is the saloon and hatchback. You will have to have the correct combinations for a correct back box otherwise as found out by the OP the tailpipe will either sticks out like a sore thumb or well hidden behind the bumper.

Right thanks for the info pps, I took the car to garage today and the mechanic said that they will either extend it by putting a sleeve on it or by putting extra pipe behind it somewhere.

He said the previous exhaust was special or something lol but it was the genuine ZS one. So hopefully it should be fixed on Saturday as that's when he has told me to bring it in.. :)

lol @ The mechanic who claims a standard exhaust was 'special' to cover his own error in ordering the wrong part!

I would personally go with a chrome sleeve, if you can get that. Will look better than before if you can do that. :) I paid money to put one on mine, just because it looks so much better.

He hasn't really ordered the wrong part. As far as I'm aware no aftermarket companies make standard backbox's for the mk2. I had this problem when trying to find an exhaust for my mk2.

In the end I had to do the same as they've offered you, fit a mk1 backbox and add a chrome finisher.
If it was me, I would expect the replacement to be perfect and nothing else would do.

At least they are going to put it right though. :)

Right, I went to the garage today and the mechanic couldn't decide on what to do. So he gave me some options to either get a sleeve put on or he can order me the original back box but it will cost a lot more money.

Obviously I know that you can't get them any more so what's my best option?

I want it to look good too, I don't want any screws showing if a sleeve is put on.

I have already been charged ÂŁ65 for the exhaust and ÂŁ35 for labour. I can always tell him to take the part off as it's not right and I can order one myself, atleast that way I'll know exactly how much it is.

So any suggestions on what I can use on my mk2 saloon which is not too expensive?

Thanks

The reality is that most people don't care if a cheap, bog-standard exhaust comes up an inch or two short, they only care whether it sounds ok and will pass the MOT (and I suspect Trading Standard would tend to agree).

By the time it escapes from the tail pipe, exhaust gas is cool enough when idling to not do any damage. And when driving along, air movement will ensure no damage occurs to bodywork, even if the exhaust gas is a bit hotter, so this isn't a safety issue, merely a cosmetic one.

I'm probably really old fashioned (at 23! :p ) but if the garage were willing to sort it, I'd have left it at that and ordered a trim myself.

It's more the fact they're willing to sort it that does it for me - I'm usually willing to give someone that's eager to fix a problem a fair bit of slack.
