18 months ago I had a break-in while I was away. They came in by the back door (smashed their way through the cat flap and were able to reach a hanging key). They took a bunch of things like video, hi-fi, as you'd expect. But they also found my car keys near the front door and stole my 620. (I suspect it must have been someone who knew something about me, because my car was parked in a residents' car park, not outside the house. In fact, I'm pretty sure I know who it was, or at least what miserable junky set they belong to and what neighbour they were in with. The police, of course, couldn't care less).

Anyway, the happy ending to the story is that my car was recovered the next day, with the keys in the ignition and, amazingly, undamaged apart from a crack in the windscreen and some puzzling scuffing on the steering wheel. (Any guesses?).

Needless to say, I've upped the security a lot since then, with spiky railings and gates 'n' all (if anyone tries to get in, they'll leave a sizeable DNA sample behind - like a liver, for example).

I leave mine in my the trouser pocket when I take them off. Always the thought that key hooks were just asking for trouble! But then my mate has a key hook in his kitchen with keys to a 1990 Ferrari Testarossa/2000 CLK convertible/2001 Jag X Type, is he mad??? I think so!:eyes

That makes depressing reading :(

If my car got nicked I don't think I'd want it back. Last thing you want is the police knocking on your door saying "we found your car sir" with 2k more on the clock and all the signs of a thorough ragging. Not to mention, every time you get in you're thinking "those theiving scum were in here".

My brother sold his 200 after he had his stereo nicked - every time he saw the the screwdriver marks on the centre console where they levered it out it reminded him...

I leave mine on a chair in my living room . . . I still have them my pocket now . . . just don't have the car anymore. The insurance company are calling me back tomorrow to go through all the details, they do all of it over the phone, no need for paperwork anymore. I was reading my policy glossy brochure this morning . . I don't get a courtesy car "if your car is stolen or damaged beyond economical repair" . . . looks like I'll be driving my G-reg Renault 19 for a while yet :~(

Have you enquired about a new one Simon?

I wouldn't want you to jump the gun but I'm sure you would want to get out of the Renault ASAP!
But then if they find his car he's f*cked! Saying that it took MGR about 2 weeks longer to make my new car than for the insurance to pay out. The one good thing I can report is that Privilege ( MGR's free insurance people ) don't make you wait that long if your car stays missing ( can't remember the exact amount of time but I remember being quite impressed ) The bit about no replacement car for stolen cars is standard on a lot of insurance policies - bit of a cop-out but there you go!

I think Dave means have I enquired about how long it will take to get a replacement . . . Yes I have, there was one the same as mine at Rover. Given the option I may opt for a change of colour and interior . . I'll have to wait and see . . .

Many, many years ago i worked with a chap on Repo cars. Don't cry they where all busness types who didn't want to pay for the car!

Kenny was a crook, he told me to hide my cars keys of a night. Ah i said you don't know where they are!

He told me three places to look in peoples houses. He was right on the second guess!

I have a bunch of car keys by the back door, they even have "Type R" on the Fob, they however NOT the keys to the "R"! If you press the door unlock button an Alarm in the side path/garage go's off.

I have a hidden place to put the keys to the "R". I also have a house alarm and a German shepped Dog!

Ah, best solution, hide the keys in the dog! Or probally better (and less messy), put the keys on a chain around the dog's neck, like to see a theif brave enough to try and take them!! lol

If he was right on the second guess - where are these three places? If we're to stop these g1ts, then knowing where not to put the keys would be handy!!
