What's ZS build quality like? Honestly?

I've had a TF for about 14 months and despite lots and lots of trips to the dealer it's still not right. I've just about reached the end of my rope with the car and I think I'm going to have to change it before the winter.

Now, seriously, what is the build quality of the ZS like? I drove a 180 before I bought the TF so I don't need to be sold on the performance and handling but are they put together properly, and do they stay that way after a couple of thousand miles? I've not been completely put off MGs by the TF, but I really don't want the same experience again.

Had my 2005MY MGZS 180 for 2 weeks now, and to be honest, i had a Focus before hand, and that is well screwed together, but with the Z is lacking in some areas:

1. the coin tray(In front of the Fuse Box) - really cheap nasty plastic(Broke already
2. Drivers window rubber seal - catches on window and folds in on itself, stops window going down
3. Inside B pillar trim(drivers side) - loose, wont clip back in!

Apart from these things the car is generally okay, but as i found out from past experiance, buying a new car and you will find faults on it, no matter what they are, no car is perfect when you get it from the dealer.

After 1 month of owning a 120+ generally quality is satisfactory.

My more detailed observations:

Electric windows not the fastest in the world.
Boot lid a bit flimsy (won't always hold itself up).

On the positive side:

Aircon is very good, especially the rapid cool using the air circulation.
Great seats - Have done 300 mile trip in my ZS, didn't need cutting out of it like some other cars on long journeys.

Having driven the 180 you'll know what a beast it is, go and buy one.

More likely a switch issue if it is the drivers window as this has one touch down (pre MY04 cars).
Sorry stu you must of read my post on the elecy window thread your my04 should have one shot down but all it needs is a little touch as there is no second "click" as on the pre facelift models

As for the build quality it is excellent on mine just a shame i have a crap dealer.

if you buy a facelift model you cannot go wrong as they are just pure class

60,000 miles in 19 months in my ZS+120 and I can say the build quality is as good as everyone else.

Yes, my coin tray is broken too - but then I was a little heavy handed with it.

B pillar door seal does keep comming off, but then I rub against it sometimes getting in and out - it just pops back on - if it needs a little lining up.

Had my MY03 ZS180 for 1 year now...

Generally I'm pretty impressed with the overall package.. engine, response, handling, comfort, economy for a big engine etc.. but there are a few disappointing areas where I feel that MGR could have tried a little harder...

The XPG paint finish is pretty good but there are a few blemishes in the paint on the rear bumper which you would have thought would have been picked up on a final inspection before leaving the factory..

Generally the interior is a nice place to be... seats are excellent, head and legroom is good (I'm 6ft 5ins tall !), dashboard (despite all the crap you read in magazines) is well screwed together and has good ergonomics, dials are easy to read and look cool at night... however, the kick plates, cubby hole flap near the fusebox, plastic housing around the front seatbelts, and rear wheel arches are a bit cheap and nasty - oh, and the leccy window switches look cr4p too - surely it wouldn't cost alot more to improve the quality of all of these and improve the ambience of the cabin overall.

There are no rattles or squeaks though, which after 12 months of keen driving in an area of Leeds where the councils are obsessed with speed bumps etc.. is pretty good !

The stereo speakers are pretty lame too and if you like your music I would stronly recommend replacing them... the Kenwood head unit isn't too bad though..

Also, the horn is really naff.. my old Mk3 218iS had a belter of a horn.. why didn't that make it over onto the Zed ?

Overall the car handles great and feels very solid and composed when you are behind the wheel.. and for the money is a decent machine for someone wanting Honda Civic Type R/Leon Cupra R/Clio 172 pace but likes a bit a space for luggage/passengers and something that feels substantial not skittish and doesn't bounce over potholes and feel rattly and noisy like the majority of hot hatches..

A few more horses and a bit more torque wouldn't go amiss either... after 12 months I've grown used to it ! :)

Despite the constant lousy press MGR's products receive, I must say that I have been in cars that are far far worse that magazines rate much higher just because they are French or Italian etc..

Hope this helps..

I have to agree with your sentiments - had my ZS180 for a few months now - gone in today to sort out an earthing fault which causes the rear fogs to flash in time with the intermitant wipers !!

The coin tray has fallen apart abit but other than that no annoying rattles or knocks that I have had to put up with in the brand new fiat that I chopped in to get the MG.....I am overall impressed with the car, I bought it for the performance and road stance rather than the quality (thats cause I also have a BMW 3 series. :) ) but I have to admit that though the plastics arent the best quality around they are all put together well!

As with all label's / reputations its hard to shake them off once they stick......

I've done just over 33k miles in around a year and a half and the car seems fine. I wouldn't say that build quality is bad, it just seems to be a bit less consistent that with some other manufacturers - it's pot luck if you end up with a Friday afternoon special. A while back I had a Megane Coupe, and everything that could go wrong, did - it ended up nearly killing me when the steering rack fell apart. Buy the 180 - you know you wat one :grouphug:
