Circumstances mean I have to stick with small cars for a while (Parking a major factor both at home and work + Insurence). My Current hack is a old Polo which I plan to keep for a little while and mod it a little.

Now the itch has come back I wasnt a Rover again, now I had a 114Sli Auto once which was a nippy wee car but I moved on to a bigger MG. Now im not all that clued up on the Metro/100 series and I have always shyed away due to the euro ncap rating.

So I have a few question to put to you guys, what is the top spec 100? did any have Powersteering? Did the cabby come with electric windows?

the one car I am looking at is the Cabby as I think it looks so cute I may explode, so Im wondering are these the 1.4 16v 101bhp like the 214? So im wanting somthing nippy for around town and the motorway :)

Any advise would be great just struggling to decide my next car.

The top spec 100, if you want 'luxury' is the 114 GSi. Some have optional full leather seats and door panels. A later GSi is better as you get electric windows.

If its a small sport version you want, then the 114 GTA is your option, although only available in 3dr.

Unfortunately no Metros/ 100s ever came with PAS. As for the cabby I wouldn't know, but my brain is telling me they didn't, but its not a hard thing to fit if its the same as the normal tros.

Places to check for Metros, is on the Metro Owners Club classified listings and also ebay. Be aware of the usual K series procedure for checking and also the rust points on metros. I.E the rear arches, sills, jacking points and also if you can try and lift the front passenger corner of the carpet to check for floorpan rust.

NEVER buy from RMS cars on ebay

This SLi is basically a GSi except it hasn't got electric windows or alloys:

Kits can be bought from other members and fitted in an afternoon. Plus sets of alloy wheels come up all the time also.

only the 114GSi gets electric windows as standard in the UK. exported Sli's do have e/w
114GTa e/w was optional.

111GSi has manual windows but apart from that looks identical to the 114GSi and the 111GSi still have remote central locking.

the metro cabrio was extremly rare in 16v form and gets the Metro Gti body kit and wheels (basically a GTi cabrio but it never got the GTi badge.

Most uk Rover 100 cabrios are 1.4 and equal to the 114SLi spec wise but with a electric hood.
I don't think any UK cabrios came with e/w standard but many people have retrofitted it from scrapped GSi's.

Some export cabrios have come back to the UK only have 1.1 engine. These were popular for rental cars in small islands in south europe. Theres still a fair few 1.4 cabrios on Jersey and Gensey.

Major thing to check for is rust on all models. Everything off the top spec cars can be retrofitted onto the lower spec models. Personally I would put not having rust above anything else otherwise it could defeat the cheap car project if its going to require TLC.

check metropower.co.uk for how to guide on upgrades.

Yeah we have been moaning about him for years on MetroPower :D
He just paints everything in sight and over saturates the pictures to make them look shiney lol

Electric windows are tricky on a cab, because you have to get it to stop bang on and not keep going through the roof!

As Martin said though, dont worry about whats its got as it can all be retrofitted, get the best shell you possibly can :)

As the others have said, the most important thing with a metro is getting a decent shell. The mechanics and oily bits are pretty simple and easy to sort out so if you found a decent shell with HGF then you are onto a winner!

I got mine on 53k and it was roughly what I wanted but the shell was mint so I got it and just over time added bits and pieces until I got it to the condition its in atm.

I like my toys in the car :p

So the plan as it stands in no particular order:
  • Rover 114 Cabby (subject to change)
  • Upgrade to ZR seats (or similar)
  • Retrim standard or GTI rear bench
  • GTI skirts
  • MGF mirror
  • Toyo Tyres (or similar)
  • If there is room after the ZR seats, Im considering a arm rest.
  • Electric windows
  • Heated seats
  • uprated speakers (no sub due to space restrictions)
  • Exhaust system (depending)
  • Retrim of dash (May just respray black along with the interior plastics)
Not exhaustive but just the line of thinking im going down, and before I start to do anything I want to be sure there is no rust or it has been delt with. Reunderseald etc. My only worry is the stiffness of the chassis because I intend to add the GTI dampers.
