Want to uprate injectors in the MGF 1.8i

Hi guys it's been ages since I was on this forum. I notice a lot of old faces still here :)

I have a brand new Emerald K6 ECU here to fit to the MiG and was wondering if anyone has experience in choosing uprated injectors for her before she goes on the rolling road.

I am going to graph her now, then when the cams go in, and then again when the Jenveys are put on so I have a good history of what the changes have done to her performance.

Any help with the injectors question would be most appreciated!

... if memory serves changing injectors on the k doesn't do much apart from over fuel....
I guess it comes down to engine management system. On my turbo TF with standard ECU (MEMS3 if I recall correctly), I run 305cc/min injectors without a remap, and on top of this I use a Rising Rate Fuel Pressure Regulator to get fueling more or less right, which is a bit like building a Swiss watch with a pair of boltcutters, and still the k-series does not suffer from overfueling, mainly as a result of the closed loop system that uses the AFR sensor to adjust duty cycle of injectors continiously. Maybe the ECU on the F's were slightly less sophisticated?

In terms of injector capacity, at the standard (blue?) TF injectors' rating of 200 cc/min, these injectors are already theoretically / technically too small for an engine making 160 bhp, as the duty cycle at 3 bar pressure is most probably >85% at max power, which means that control of fueling is not as good as one wants it to be. In my calculation, the TF160 injectors should only be good enough / have a decent margin of safety for an engine output of 130 bhp.

As this is predominantly a race vehicle I already have 52mm throttle body etc etc etc and the new Emerald system will be tuned next week.

I can't find a definite answer on this question so will leave the injectors be for the moment, and when the new 287 cams go in next month, I might look at some red ones as a test...with a fuel regulator and the new Emerald ECU, I would like to think that they will look after any over fuelling problems? Not sure, but I'll give it a try and report back with some definite results.

I am going to run three tunes on the rolling road this year...next week, then after the cams and injectors, then after the new Jenvey straight-to-head throttle bodies and Emerald settable-tubes are installed in May.

If nothing else, it may be of interest to anyone else doing this sort of enhancement :)

Depends on your end goal, since you've got the Emerald, I'd go for the beige 218cc injectors found in the MEMS 1.9/2j engines (only 1600/1800 IIRC) as these will be enough for 200bhp.

If your level of engine tune is aiming for more than this, then either up the fuel pressure, or go for bigger injectors...

If you're engine is expected to produce more than around 185bhp then you'll probably max out the stock 160 injectors at standard fuel pressure.

If it were me, I'd fit the MGF VVC ones as if you've bought an Emerald, you've probably got further engine mods planned!

i've not had to shop for injectors yet myself, however on my last project i spent weeks of research trying to find the right set.
I dont know what the OEM CC of the standard injectors, or the configuration, but what i did last time when upgrading a 140bhp to a 200bhp led me to uprating the pump and a pressure regulator, and leaving the stock 220cc injectors alone.

however, there are plenty of different designs to chice from - the nozzle makes a difference too. get a single nozzle will make bore wash more 'likely' depending on the sceneraio.
i know BOSCH did a good set of 6-nozle injectors for my last project, helps to spray the fuel better with the same capacity....

maybe a bit extreme, but this picture shows what I am talking about...

My 2cents worth

I have been reading a lot about injectors on this forum (almost have engine back together) & quite regularly I see that you list the fuel pressure at 3 Bar, yet checking MG manual & looking elsewhere it appears Rover run 3.5Bar (at least on the TF). It's not a great difference, however it does boost the blue Bosch-156024- injectors from 192cc/min to 208cc/min. One other thing that I haven't seen mentioned here is flow rates are calculated by running heptane through them which doesn't have the same viscosity as fuel.

What has everyone that is running over 180bhp done?

Not one performance site ever mentions injectors as part of their upgrade/modification.
Here are some handy links, please bear in mind the usual disclaimers.

Handy calc for working out changes by upping fuel pressure;
http://users.erols.com/srweiss/calcpchg.htm
Or
http://www.rceng.com/technical.aspx which gives you all the formula's & calcs you could need.

Injector data table;
http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tableifc.htm

Stan Weiss' home page - some great calcs at the bottom (more than just the fuel pressure calc;
http://users.erols.com/srweiss/index.html

I am looking into these (they are very common injectors in Aus)
Part*Number lbs/hr cc /min grams /min PSI BARS lbs/hr cc/mi
0-280-155-931 28.55 300.1 215.8 43.5 3.0 28.55. 300.1
80% 95% Feed Impedance Application n-H
43.9 52.2 EV6 High Holden v8-5.7l LS1, HSV v8-5.7l LS1 -

Looking at the calcs these run 300cc/min @ 3Bar, up that to 3.5Bar
And it goes to 324cc/min. This puts them right in the ball park for 200bhp.

Please let me know if I missed something in my calcs.
