hi guys,

my coup has been making an odd rattle noise at around 2500 rpm since i bought it, i've read here that a 7 quid bracket fixes it, please can someone explain this in detail as i want to go to a rover dealer tomorrow and get one. part number would be marvellous but any info appreciated

also, sadly, my exhaust pipe blew itself out today and needs to be replaced, golden opportunity for a stainless jobbie i think. i need a nice one *promptly if possible*, any recommendations? (with contact details)?

cheers in advance

Rich

PS - it's a great read sifting thru this place :)

Bit of angle-iron and some jubilee-clips, mate.

I think the best you can do is tell them that your Cat's heatshield is rattling. The RPM you describe the noise happening at is in line with the problems I have heard of.

You shouldn't need part numbers - they'll have heard it all before!

The rattle could be one of a few things.

If it ONLY happens while braking it might be a pad rubbing the dust shield.

If its during normal driving, it's either the heat shield, front flexi-pipe or the bracket....

A full stainless system ought to sort you out! :D

The kit bolts the front pipe to manifold joint area to 2 holes machined into the front of the engine block via this bracket. You would normaly fit this if the downpipe is ratling in the flexi joint area. However, if you're fitting a new downpipe anyway, try that first and see if the rattle goes....

thanks!

no new downpipe, only replaced from the cat backwards. rattle is still there. but now it also runs lumpy at low rpm in high gears. and it pinks when i rag it. is this a charaeristic of ST exhausts? it was fine before :\ (sounds nice tho)

The bracket will certainly stop the flexi rattle. I'm picking mine up satdee morning. Even with a new flexi there is a little rattle on ramps/bumps etc.

As for the stainless exhaust - I had a Piper Stainless system (cat back) fitted to my old Escort Zetec. This coupled with an FSE boost valve and K&N 57i meant that the exhaust created 'back-burble' whenever i came off the throttle. Sounded awesome - so much so that my next door neigbour went out and bought a Peco big bore for his Scooby!

The system never really felt 'lumpy' as such, but it certainly wanted a few more revs to get the most out of it compared to the standard system. At low revs in traffic I often had to drop a gear before accelerating because the exhaust was breathing freer than the standard one, and needed more revs to get the most from it.

Can't recall the system causing any pinking though... You might want to speak to a specialist Rover Tuning company and see if they know what the fault is. With the new system fitted your engine might want some of the 'default' ECU settings altering slightly (if that's possible on a Rover??) to allow for the better exhaust system.

If its at 2500 grand then its more than definate the bracket.

Seen this on 10+ plus VVC Coupes now and the bracket fixed them all.

A bit long winded, but the Rover Tech bulletin is here, with part numbers and fitting guide.

bracket info is tops, i'll get this sorted, as for the exhaust, here is the story so far..

the new system is loud, damn loud and i think here is no back pressure whatsoever. i;m having it remade next week to take the deep drone away.

i used super unleaded petrol today, and the pinking went. not sure what that's all about, i may disconnect the battery to reset the ecu, let it relearn the powercurve.

will adding the 57i filter help with the lumpyness, or could that make it worse?

i dont want to go mad and turn this nice car into a mk3 escort type boy racer mobile (apologies to them, i dont mean any offence) if you know what i mean :)
