Torque setting for spark plugs?

Hiya just changing my plugs to platinum ones what torque is it there set to on 2001 mgf 3 of my old ones came out very easy with a half dead battery in a drill is tat normal or should they be tighter?

I've had a very tappy engine at the mo which has now been starting to put engine management light on every once in a while sometimes flashing

The tapping stops when I get to a certain rpm but starts again when it goes low rpm, also the engine seems to be idling rough?

My coil packs seem to look in good condition?

Any thoughts

From memory the torque is 25 Nm

Surely tapping could be lack of oil getting to the cam and followers?

Check oil level. After that it could be oil pump or blocked oilways (crud). Do all the easy tests first though.

Here's a thought - there are two ways to get oil into the engine - the first is the easily accesible dipstick nozzle, though it's time consuming filling up from there.

There is a second on the engine itself I believe, though I can't remember exactly where it is, though I do remember seeing it when I had the access panel off. If you were to add oil from there (just a top up) it would be interesting to see if the tapping noise diminished for a while, as it probably sends oil direct to the cam area (I stand to be corrected on this).

Other causes of tapping might be a crack in a manifold, check out if there is any blowing from the exhaust manifold when the engine is running, another access panel-off job.

Finally, tappets are known to stick sometimes. Maybe some crud stopping them from filling with oil. You could try one of these proprietary cleaners. Wynn's has been mentioned before, someone even suggested using diesel in the oil! Can't say I would be happy running the car with diesel instead of oil, I'd take that one with a pinch of salt...

Chuck a litre of diesel in and drive for ten minutes and then change for regular oil.

Or

drop the oil and fill with diesel oil, use it for about 150 miles and then change for regular.

Both diesel fuel and diesel oil have detergants that petrol oils don't so clean the engine.

I've tried a forte motor flush, an a wynns both didn't do anything really

The interesting thing is it idles kinda rough with slight tapping
Then when you start to slowly depress peddle the tapping gets louder an faster
Then somewhere around the 3000-4500rpm it goes all nice a quiet
But at idle an slowly building up its very loud even had someone say it sounds like it running on 3 cylinders?

If it was running on three cylinders you'd find it very lumpy and you could read that fault code off with an OBD reader - it'd say something like 'multiple misfire' or 'misfire in cylinder #' etc

Still, it might be worth pouring some oil down the oil filler on top of the cam cover just to see if it helped temporarily.

My TF idles with a slight uneveness, always has, nothing to write home about though.

I'm still kind of drawn to thinking you have oil starvation in the head, considering the problem goes away at high rpm, but that's just a wild-arsed guess.

We'll your the second person who said that, the other said it may be a tappet that's only filling/emptying or whatever way round it is when it's at high rpm maybe working the pump harder when it's a a higher rpm or just a knackered tappet,
He wanted to start by taking sump off an scraping out any crud tat may be in it then clean oil pump etc, then if tat failed work on top presumably tappet?

Sounds like you need a code reader connected. Otherwise it's all guesswork.
