The difference between an I,SLI & GSI

Can anyone tell me the exact difference between an I, SLI & GSI?

My own 400 was supplied to Barretts of Canterbury, used by them as a demo car and apparently was a dealer special. When I bought it it came with aircon, abs, alloys, leather steering wheel with audio controls, wooden gear knob and body colored mudflaps and.......it is registered as an "I".

I have since fitted rear head restraints, rear door kickplates and the wood trim kit to the centre console.

I am guessing, but i suspect it is almost an SLI, but would be very interested to know the exact spec for an SLI and also for a GSI. I know the GSI has leather and cruise but what else???????

Any answers?
Adrian.

I had a 416sli. This has 4 electric windows, electric heated mirrors, air con, abs, disk brakes all round, rear headrests, rear armrest. This was an R 97 saloon. I believe the later 1.6 400/45's lost the rear disk brakes (but could be wrong). IIRC the only difference between the gsi and the sli was the leather, cruise control and CD Autochanger. Specs on the 400's changed around P 1997 to include air con instead of sunroof etc. (apart from i models which had sunroof instead of air con!).

My ZS180 however has no rear electric windows, no rear armrest and no rear headrests.

I had a 96i 1.6 with them, by brother in law had a 96Si without them. Both saloon's with ABS.

It has been a lottery from day one.

I believe if you went for the ABS upgrade (non standard on the i model) you got rear disks so that you could see what you paid for.

The iL came out with the iS and iXL (I have the iXL). March '99 to april '00.

It does not have leather seats, steering wheel or gear knob as standard. Does have the CD, rear headrests and fogs though.

The iXL gets the leather steering wheel, rear electric windows, passenger airbag and ABS as standard on top of the iL spec.

Neither got a leather gear knob as standard.

You are wrong sorry Stu. The Sei, iS iL and iXL replaced the old models and were probably better value with more equipment. Leather was standard on the iL definitely. The iS was the sportier version and came with half leather and alloys. The iL had full leather. I have the brochure in the house. As parkers quote :

iS/iSD models are sporty-looking, with half-leather seats, front fog lamps, CD tuner, alloy wheels and rear spoiler. iL/iLD models add full leather seats, upgraded trim and carpets and six-spoke alloy wheels

Looked in my '99 MGR brochure for the range and it states that leather is an option on both the iL and iXL.

Could be a misprint in the MGR specifications section I suppose, but I looked at at least 3 iL's when buying the iXL and non had leather.

Quite likes the iS seats, but the rest of the trim was spartan. No electric wing mirrors, tweeters, rear electrics or headrests.

I am not disputing what you are saying.

The brochure I have doesn't have it as standard and the ones I saw when looking at buying the 400 didn't.

I'm not really fussed either way and quite happy to take your word for it, just saying it as I have read and seen it.

I know someone at work with a T plate 416 iL, so I'll ask them next week if theirs has.

Just to elaborate a bit. I also have six spoke alloys and lovely deep lush carpets on and in the iL. Is there any difference in the bhp figures for any of the models ?. It seems that there are so many specs. around that if you were going to choose a car to buy on specification you would have a major headache.

I bought my iL 2nd hand and didnt really look at the spec. I took it for a drive and was impressed with the performance. That it had leather was a bonus but I wouldnt say I just bought it just for that or any of the extras really. If I was buying a new car I probably would be more choosy.

Definately.

Second hand you find the one that best suits your requirements in a colour you like at a price you are willing to pay. It's down to luck as to what is available.

Having now placed an order for a new car, it's far easier. You set a budget, choose the spec and extra's you want with the colour you fancy and go haggle with the dealer.
