Custom backgrounds are the way forward.

 

I got this one a while back for my TomTom. Screein isn't brilliant, and I think it has to be a 256 colour bmp photo... which is kind of dull! Then again my tomtom is the cheapo one.

the one I used is 16million colours and works fine on my 'Tomtom' machine

If you have a splash.bmp file in the root folder, I'd try overwriting that first (rename it splash1.bmp first tho) thats all that is needed on some systems. More info here - http://www.gpsice.co.uk/splashscreen-instructions.html

I dug a little deeper on my last TomTom unit and edited the actual car that appears on the route. I now run TomTom on my iPhone and not to be beaten by Mr Jobs, I found and hacked the images on this too...
