Starting to get annoyed with low MPG... Anything I can double check?

First off, I must stress I'm not that of a heavy-foot driver, Very seldom bursts. I normally shift in between 2000 - 2500 rpm.

My last tank I got 39.6MPG. Currently I'm sitting at 300~miles with about 1/8 of the tank to go. My very old '98 petrol Clio was far more efficient. I think that is what is annoying me the most.

I see its common place to get 45-50MPG here on the forums. I can't even break the 400miles per tank barrier. Could something be at fault here? If we assume I'm an average driver, are there any sensors or other parts I should investigate?

Car is a 2005 ZR+ 115. No performance modifications whatsoever (to the best of my knowledge).

Thanks

Does it start well / go well ? Yep
does it smoke at all ? Nope
brakes binding ? Nope
tyre pressures ? Fine
air filter condition ?
maf connected ?
All fine until the last 2 as I've not checked. I assume MAF will be connected. I see MAF is quite a popular topic - may as well start reading up on it and the differences it makes!

when i first got my zr td it was doing only 35 mpg but that was down to many things that where, it was badely servised, cam belt was just about to break thank god i changed it the second i got the car home, the maf was compleatly gone a ÂŁ30 off ebay sorted that and i had a split intercooler pipe and the waist gate valve was stuck on the turbo. btw this is why you never ever buy a car off ebay even if its cheep i got mine for 1300 top spec modle air con sunroof the lot but have spent at least 800 getting it running right. my advise would be take it off the road for a couple of days and put new maf in it, and a compeat servise it makes alot more diffrence then you would think.

I find this with my petrol 1.1. I work til early in the morning sometimes, and drive back via empty country B roads at speeds 40-60 mph. When my engine is running 5th gear, 2k revs, at 1c outside air rushing in at 50mph it rarely gets fully warmed up properly on my 7 miles journey. I leave it to idle when I get home for 5 mins while I wait in car to ensure it is warm.

Colder engines naturally use more fuel due to the auto choke.

My 45 hasn't been getting decent MPG since I bought it.
It's been averaging around 40mpg, sometimes less (as low as 35mpg) and I wasn't sure why. It was worse than that when I first bought it.

Few things that were at fault with mine:

- The intercooler hose was split. Replaced that.. significant improvement to both power and MPG.
- The MAF was dead.. replaced with a ÂŁ35 cheapo one and saw minor improvement to MPG but major improvement to performance. However, the MAF has died again already as the cheapo one was rubbish so I'm going to replace with a decent one and apparently I should see better MPG with a decent quality working MAF.
- Major thing.. my clutch was slipping for around 3 months and I hadn't noticed until it became bad in low gears. I hadn't had the car long so didn't know any different and the slipping was gradual so the car seemed lacklustre when accelerating through the high ranges. I thought this was just how the car was. However, the clutch finally packed in completely last week and I've just got the car back with a brand new clutch fitted. The car drives like a different car.. so much smoother and more powerful and revs are much lower. I expect this to make quite a difference to my MPG so I'm looking forward to my new proper MAF arriving and getting the car running how it should be.
- I do 50% town driving and 50% dual carriageway driving so my MPG is expected to be lower because of all the stop starting I do on a morning.

Bear in mind I've had this car 6 months and it's never been right but all the issues were so gradual I was blissfully unaware. Once I've got my new MAF on I expect the combination of new clutch and MAF will transform the car and hopefully I'll see my MPG return to somewhere in the mid forties.
It's also having new belts next week.

How are you getting on now? Any improvement?

Filled up again yesterday - 38MPG. Horrible for a diesel. Whilst changing the clutch cable I discovered the airbox cover doesnt sit perfectly flush with the MAF and I imagine air escapes where they connect, could that play havoc with my MPG?

I'm going to try and source a replacement from a car breaker, the petrol 25/zr will have the same airbox cover wont they?

Probably, as the maf can't measure all the air gong into the intake.

Don't think they are the same. iirc, the filters are slightly different between petrol and diesel, so the airbox will be different too.

Gutted. I must have been in contact with 15 - 20+ breakers within a 20mile radius looking for SDI injectors with no joy. Most places either had petrols or nothing. The only diesel I encountered was a 45. Granted I can't take the injectors from that, but does the 45 diesel have the same airbox?

Thank you for your help :)
