SPEEDO INCORRECT?

My first impression after buying the R75 is that when travelling at the speed limit or 5-10Klm over everybody is overtaking me. Is my speedo incorrect or is the perception of Rover in Australia one of slowness and sedateness and everybody must get past this old bloke in the Rover. On some freeways in Australia we have "check speedo" signs. I guess other countries have them as well, they a sign posts erected at one kilometre intervals for 5 klms so that drivers can check the acruacy of their speedo. I had opportunity to check mine last week and my speedo clicked over the 5 klms about 50 metres past the last sign. If my maths is correct this is a 1% inacuracy or at the standard speed limit of 60kph this is about 1/2 kph inacuracy which is hardly worth worrying about. I guess my first theory must be correct. What is the perception in other parts of the world?

Its not unknown for speedos to be out by as much as 10%, more modern speedos do tend to be better, but still not bang on. A lot of things can cause this from tyre wear, to different size alloys.

1% isn't too bad, IMO.
Well on my holiday trip in my Magna (sorry if someone wants to give me a 75 I'll swap anyday) the electronic "courtesy" radar leaving Melbourne told me that my indicated 110kph was actually 98kph so I drove another 5000km just bumping it up by an appropriate amount. The odd thing was that when I arrived in NSW with the 5km odometer checks I did 5.1 km in the 5km distance or about a 2% over enthusiam on the part of the speedo (not the 12% that the Victorian Roads department said). On the journey back into Melbourne, however, my indicated 125kph was shown at 117! Now I did adjust the tyre pressures a little but not enough to cause that much variety in readings. Luckily I seem to have escaped speeding fines though.

there's no such thing as an accurate speedo but the question of how inaccurate it is is the one all manufacturers should tell you in the handbook.

ps for Allan - the additional power and torque from the 3 litre was great - I hate to think what it would be like if it only had a 2.5 like the Rover. I had two people and a jam packed boot and backseat (parents finally got sick of being storage for all their long moved out kids).

I did another speedo test today on my drive home from upstate. This time on several stretches of an extremely flat freeway I set the cruise control at 110kph as read from the speedo. I then re set the average speed on the trip computer and it immediately showed and maintained 104.3kph. As there was very little traffic on the road I reduced my speed to 80kph and reset the computer and it immmediately showed 75.6. I did tests at several speeds with the same 5kph approx variance. Conclusion, my speedo dial shows about 5kph more than the actual speed. I guess this may be a design feature so that you don't get booked for speeding I bet the designers set their watch 5 minutes ahead so they are never late.
