Re: Re: Speed Camera Site

Post it up Bravo! BUT don't rely on it. There are several of these sites kicking about and the information on them is out of date before its even been posted.:(

Anyhow, why do we as a nation have this apparent obsession with speed? Yes, speed does kill.. but so do a host of other factors. And these largely seem to go unoticed by the authorities.

Two girls were tragically killed (murdered may be a more appropriate term) a couple of miles from me on Wednesday evening. Yes speed played a part, but only a very minor one. The reason they are being interred later this morning is because some selfish bitch decided to drive for several miles the wrong way down a motorway in a Land Rover Discovery. The poor girls in the Renault Clio didn't stand a chance, with one of them dying on her 19th birthday, before she had even opened her birthday cards.

In the small hours of that morning, I had a close encounter of the pedestrian kind. Returning home from work, I swerved to avoid what I thought was a bag of rubbish on a blind corner in a 60mph zone. Knowing the road to be especially dangerous, I parked the car a couple of hundred yards away and walked back to remove the rubbish. Only I didn't find rubbish - I found a pedestrian. Blind corner, pedetrians, houses, residential area, factories, heavy HGV traffic... surely should that not mean a pavement? No, apparently not.

Several miles from where my grandmother lives there is a junction where several people have died in recent years. Six roads meet in a 60mph limit and around a blind corner. No roundabouts, no traffic lights - nothing. The most recent victim was at Easter. When visiting my grandmother, I actually take a nine mile detour to avoid the junction. Yet the junction is not included in any upgrade plans for the next few years. By contrast, I wonder how many speed cameras will be erected in the same period?

Just when will the authorities realise that speed in itself is only one cause of road deaths and accidetns? And just why is so much money being spent on speed cameras? Don't get me wrong - speed cameras have their place. But currently, are they there to raise revenue or save lives? Sadly, I suspect that it is for the former reason.

IMHO the only ways to reduce traffic accidents are more Police cars - and sanctions applied to dangerous drivers that focus upon driver education rather than revenue collection.

Hi Andy

Yes, I read the local newspaper today and found the story gut wrenching. Not least the fact that one of them had phoned her mother about five minutes earlier to say she was setting off to leave her friend home and would be back in twenty minutes.

One of the girls' fathers was caught up in the ensuing traffic chaos. Little did he know that his daughter was lying dead a few miles ahead of him.

Very, very sad.

I drive along that stretch of motorway pretty regularly. As I drove along it yesterday, I couldn't help but thinking 'what if'.

The real tragedy is that such event happen several hundred times a year throghout the UK - and all the government does is pay lip service to road safety and treat it as an opportunity to subsidise government expenditure.

Regards

John
