Sony CDX-DAB6650 installed, how can I improve sound?

I'm a fussy person when it comes to music, but I have never been able to get the right quality sound in any car I have owned.

I'm not looking for a woofer thats going to fill the boot space, just loud, clear, crisp sound with less treble and more deep bass.

I replaced headunit with a DAB Sony explod 6650 its says 4x52w. Old unit was 4x45, but with choosing the explod setting and adjusting the high, mid and low, to a deepish tone, it still sounds tinny and the deeper I make it the sound gets really bad and the volume cannot be increased due to the distortion.

I remember replacing the door and parcel shelf speakers in my last car, but that made the sound more high pitched and has put me off doing the same to this car.

The only time I can listen to my music loud is in the car.

Any idea's on how to proceed?

Cheers!

component speakers and a good amp.

or just upgrade the speakers for now for some mids and tweets all in ones.. budget is an obvious factor though ?

If your after sound quality however, a sony wouldn't have been the first choice of headunit.

What headunit would you have gone for?

If sticking to the sony headunit, do I go for sony explod component speakers 2 for doors and 2 for parcel shelf, plus what watts and RMS should I be looking at?

The rover has little tweeters on each door where the electric mirrors are.

Thanks for your help!

are they actualy tweeters or just fake vents to make it look like tweeters?? for sound quality i would have gone with the high end alpine range or pioneer or even the mid-high end kenwood stuff. what exactly is it you want from the sound system?
volume? quality?
your head unit at 4x52watts is about 4x25watts RMS which is not particularly brilliant but should be ok for most users.

you say you want less trebble and more deep base??
by the sounds of it, your after volume rather than quality. in which case the cheapest option is probably a set of co-axial's for your doors and a set of 6x9's for your parcel shelf.
if your after sound quality then you would be looking at a set of components for the front doors with an amp to power them and possibly a sub in the boot.

if you want quality then you want the music to be well balanced not deep with lots of base.

the problem you have at the moment is that your current speakers can not cope with the bass/volumes you want out of them.
if you are happy with the sony head unit then it does not mean you would be better off sticking to sony speakers. as said if yoru looking for upgraded speakers your head unit outputs 52watts max 25watts RMS per speaker at 4 ohms. so your looking for a speaker that will at least match or exceed those figures. dont go to crazy high though. and dont beleive some of those figures on ebay or similar as they are well over exagerated.

Thank you for your reply, yes I suppose my taste would be deep bass and loud without distortion.

I did try changing the speakers in my previous rover, but the sound was deeper and better quailty with the old rover cones than the new ones which had like little tweeters in the centre of the speaker. So would it be best if I go for a standard cone, I beleive you call them component speakers?

If I were to also go down the amp route, what amp would I be looking for?

Thanks again

components tend to be better for quality as the tweeter is seperate from the base driver. going by what you seaid on the cheapish budget your probably looking for something like this http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/alpine-sxe1725s-61216cm-coaxial-2way-speaker-p-3508.html for the front doors
and http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/kenwood-kfcs6962-inch-3way-speaker-system-300w-p-15665.html for the parcel shelf. should be quite basey and you should be able to use the EQ on your head unit to damp down the mid-high frequencies abit too.

if you wanted to amp the speakers you would need to make sure your head unit has a pre-out which you seem to have 2 so your fine on that front. amp wise nothing to fancy just a 4 channel amplifier something like 4x50watts rms should do fine. try and get one with high pass and low pass filters on though to help with the EQ'ing.
(eq'ing as in equalising, being able to adjust different sound frequencies)

sound advice, i'd also suggest some sound deadening in the doors

lol no worries. i used to have a sony xplod head unit in my first car cdx2200 or something like that. with some sony 6x9's and some goodman speakers wasnt to bad actually. sound deadening in the doors can also help too, can help keep the base tight. doesnt have to be to expensive or fancy just ebay some dynomat or similar.
i decided to go for quality in my rover 25 this time around and ive got a dynomat extreme kit in the front doors (only a 3 door car woop) ive got a very nice pair of kenwood components in the front doors (seperate bass and tweeters with crossover) and 2x 10inch subs in the boot. ive got nothing in the back, all they do is fill the sound anyway. i went for 10inch subs as i wanted the tight quality that you cant get with some 12 or 15inch subs as the cones are to big to keep under strict controll.
my head unit only plays the audio it does no amplifing, ive got a 2x75watt rms amp for my front component speakers and ive got 2 1x150watt rms amps for my subs (one each obviously) and ive actually got stereo subwoofers :D you know sound tracks are devided into left and right..... to give you a stereo image. if your watching a film for example and someone is standing on the left of your screen his voice comes out of the left speaker. same thing for audio. the sound from the left half of the sound track comes out of the components and sub on the left hand side of my car and vice versa. some people tend to have mono subs which means both subwoofers would play exactly the same thing, mine can play different things at the same time helping with the stereo image (the illusion that if you close your eyes if sounds like your actually standing infront of the band thats playing) ps you know where the rep button is :p

Which Speakers? - Best Sound

Had a listen to some speakers in Halfords today, dilberately setup so you couldn't hear the radio, so I went back to the car and used my own CD.

I now know the difference in Component and the ones with the built in tweeter. Component is low and muffled, the one with the tweeter in the middle gives the full range, but I'm worried at picking the wrong ones and having the sound being to tinny.

Also as the parcel shelf is solid, I've decided to stick to the round speakers. And as you suggested get the dynamat or alterative to enhance the sound and stop rattling.

So bearing that in mind, what round speakers would you guys recommend for the front and back connecting to a Sony Xplod head unit 4x52w?

I'm not sure of the size of the holes in the door (Rover 400 1.6 Auto Bubble shape 1999 TReg) but the parcel shelf ones are 16cm and as I'm trying to get the best sound I can with the headunit I've already got I'm not to worried on how much I have to pay for the best speakers.

Thanks again guys!

over the years ive tried diffrent combinations, including the 6x9s in the parcel shelf, in the end i just went for a 15" 1000w sub in the boot and two decent front speakers in the doors, did away totally with parcel shelf speakers..
have stupid amount of bass now,and nice loud and clear in the front...

Best Bass Speaker? (round to fit original hole)

Many people seem to suggest Alpine speakers?

Basically I suppose I just want to know what people think of the main brands, Alpine, Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer etc so I can find a decent sound with good bass. And is there anything I should look for when buying. Don't want to make the mistake I made before.

Pulled one of the rear speakers out today, can't beleive 8 years on and Rover were still putting those cardboard old speakers in the cars. Speaker
looks exactly identical to what was in my early 90's 400.

i agree with mushymarlin. keep it to just subs in the back, your not going to get thumping deep bass out of a pair of 6x9s,it does just fill the sound out in the back...

I noticed the sony h/unit has a sort of volume control for the sub. Does that mean I could get a single small sub and it would plug in with the phono connection on the back on the unit. Or do you need an amp?

I like a good beat, but I don't want to bounce down the round.

trial and error is the best way...but i wouldnt have any speakers in the back except subs, maybe try a sub with built in amp. depends if you want to fill your boot with a big sub. mines a 15" bass cannon, two foot long, not much room for much else ,but it does throw out some bass.

Audio Shop - Rockford Speakers

Went to a local car audio shop today and they recommended Rockford Fosgate Prime R1653 6.5" Full range 3-way speakers.

they got 10 out of 10 from the testfreak website, but I have now just found out that they are ÂŁ35 to ÂŁ40 online, I have just paid ÂŁ70 at the shop, and gonna pay another ÂŁ30 + vat for him to fit. I think I will just return them, don't you think I have just been ripped off?

Buy them online instead, mind you I would have liked to have them fitted as I can't get the screw holes to line up and don't want a big job. Any recommendations on an easier way to get them fitted?

yeah it will be easy doing the door ones as the speakers have many different holes for getting it lined up, its the parcel shelf one thats annoying me. Can get the speaker to line up with 2 holes which is good enough, but the original rover cover will not fit so having to use the speakers own cover and that has 4 holes in set places and of course none line up. :cus:
