Soft top folding technique..

Hi all,

I've recently bought a TF for my missus (as you may have seen on another thread). I was reading the manual today and it mentions that you should unzip the rear window before folding the softop down.

At the moment we have a hard top on the car but I know that the softop doesn't have the rear window unzipped because I got the guy to show me the softop before I bought it. Also, it says that once the softop is down (with rear window unzipped) the cover should be placed over it... Again, this isn't the case with ours, the cover is just lying in the boot...

So... is the manual over-zealous on its instructions for softop use or do I need to take the hard top off tomorrow and follow the books instructions??

Cheers

We're going to get the hardtop off tomorrow weather permitting and have a look at unzipping the rear window etc.. It will also be good practise to have a go at. There's meant to be a cold snap next week so we need to get it done for then

Thanks for all the advice (as always!)

Herbie.. not sure what you meant when you said "I'd just like to add the fixing points" ? Do you mean to pay special attention to these fixing points or to actually make sure they are there??? (sorry if I'm being an idiot).. cheers

The wondow has 3 press studs which clip onto the T-bar to keep the window straight and crease free.

I've just been out trying to put the soft top down properly (i.e. unzipping the rear window etc) and it won't lie flat because of the roll bar things that are on.. see piccies below....

I'm assuming that those roll bar things weren't standard with the car? If so, any suggestions about the best way to fold the soft top (i've also just discovered that due to the rear window being creased it has got a slight crack in it eeeek!!! although that is the subject for another thread).

Any ideas for the best way to store the soft top in order to stop the rear window getting creased?

Is that right what I read above? You don't need to unzip the window when putting the top down with a glass window?
And can anyone tell me what the cover looks like that your talking about, the cover for when the roof is down, as I didn't get one with my car and I want one
The glass rear window doesn't need unzipping, in fact some don't even have a zip.

The cover looks like this

.... and following bobbybrowns post, can someone tell me whether a glass rear window would work with those silver hoops that are on mine.

I'm assuming those silver hoops are an extra?? If so, are they purely asthetic or are they there to act as a kind of roll-cage??

So many questions and yet so little time sober to type them... :bb:

Might have to rip 'em off mate. Especially if they are stopping the rear window lying flat....

I don't understand why they are on there in the first place if their only function is asthetic and, in the meantime, they are making the rear window get creased everytime the top is down??

The glass rear window looks a lot smaller than the plastic one. Does anyone know whether that would fit behind the roll hoops?

Cheers

The hoops are usually the first thing people notice about my car! And they do help divert attention from the not-so-nice nylon-look seats!!!

Is it correct that if you have the hoops fitted the original tonneau cover won't fit? Can't seem to fit mine and as its in the boot still looking brand new don't think the previous owner could either.

JT - them roll hoops may be factory fitted however I doubt it due to the x-power logo on them. They look like the mk1 roll hoops that was an optional extra for the TF from MGR.

I have the mk2 MG roll hoops and also have a glass screen soft top :)
The glass window folds down easily and sits no way near the the hoops :)

MGFM, thanks for the heads up.

When it comes to getting a glass rear window fitted can it be retro fitted or is it a case of a complete soft top?

Also, what kind of cost are we talking??

I think we'll probably just silicone the rear window and see how she gets on with it but it would be nice to have all the options.

Thanks mate

Heres a pic of my very inexpensive (and cosmetic) hoops with the red B&G cover that never got used.

I've never unziped the window (last 5 years) when the hard top is on and have never had a problem. Never bought a hood nanny eihter but have thought about one - just never got around to it - for those that don't know - its a foam roll that sits in the plastic window once folded.
