I have recently purchased a 75 1.8t, i really like the car but have noticed when i switch the engine off i get a coffee like smell from the front of the car, the car has been checked for the head gasket, other than that the car runs great.

Hey and welcome to Mg-rover.org!!!

It may actually be..... well coffee... I drove for 3 weeks with my car smelling like a kipper!... noticed Tesco's fish portions in batter had slipped under passenger seat and turned to... well liquid... NOT NICE!! Coffee would do the same if mixed with water and stained a portion of the car i.e previous owner had ordered some McDonald's battery acid..sorry coffee.. slipped and got some down the vents or some other place.. As the blowers blow fresh air into the car, you don't smell it, only when you turn the engine off or blowers would it become evident.

Also, had a problem on a 600 a few years back when the washer solution actually went off due to bacterial ingress..no idea how.. but it smelt sweet like sick.. might be worth a sniff at least see if its coming from there..

Let us know how you get on.

Just go round the car.. sniffing the seats and such... just don't let the neighbors catch you.... or they will talk... you seat sniffer! ;)

Don't you mean ewwww not awwww ... unless you were the fish perhaps lol.

As for bit of useless information Mr.....
A) Was 'trying' to make you feel welcome which I now take back and
B) It WAS my own experience as in what happened to me. I.e if it smells of coffee it probably is.. it could be the screen wash.. or something could of fallen under the seat... If you can get so uppity over a simple account.. what happens when you really fall out with someone.... what a strange fellow...!

How 'new' is the car? Has it had any new parts fitted on the engine? My 'new' 1.8T had a strange a smell after run. This also came from the front and was due to the 'newness' burning off. What I mean is the various lube, anti-rust, storage fluids used on various parts can give off all sorts of different smells as they evaporate/burn off the hot engine. If you don't find a spilled Nescafe bottle under the seat, pop the bonnet after a run and check for smells there. You can also get it from hot brakes.

Coffee smell

Was going to say it's probably Costa's, theyr'e opening up in every nook and cranny around Cambridge. Then again, perhaps I'd better keep quiet as I don't have any useful suggestions, but hope you find it, good luck.
(as for the kippers, rings bells. We used to smuggle 20 kg or so of the very best steak over the border into S. Africa.
Just before the border used to hide it in the caravan lockers, go through then stop and quickly get it back into the cold box. Terrible smell after about a week. Just couldn't find it at first. One packet had some how got on top of the mud guard right forward in the lower locker. Almost impossible but it happened & the stink, indescribable !
