After hitting a brick wall with the idea of getting my f back on the road due to insurance costs then discovering that i could actually insure the F for less than i can insure a Ford Ka, peugeot 106 or it seems almost any other car I decided that i would put everything i get from the sale of my Rover 75 into getting the F roadworthy and looking like a decent car again (I can't turn up for job inteviews in a car covered in rust with a front bumper covered in deep scratches and holes)

In the last week i have been thinking after seeing people managing to buy a decent F for very little money and looking myself on gumtree and ebay that i may be better off forgetting the scabby green zombie car and finding another.

The problem i am having is that this car means more to me than any other car i have owned, I bought it for ÂŁ200 last year in an unroadworthy state after having a bit of a confrontation with a roundabout with it's previous owner and got it back on the road that made me pretty proud of myself, but then when the cam belt tensioner let go I thought my time with the car was over until the amazing people of .org organised the mighty Russell to come get it running again so I have a connection to this little car that i don't think i'll find again with any other car

SO what to do?

My car needs a fair bit spending on it to get it good again.

getting it looking good again (winter took its toll on the bodywork :( ) will cost about ÂŁ850 to have the rust cleaned up and re-painted plus about ÂŁ100 for a front bumper.

I need to get a bolt refitted to the front subframe, i bought the bolt (ÂŁ1.80) but don't know what's needed yet to get it sorted, could be that the old bolt needs drilling out or a new captive nut welding in place so no idea of the cost yet.

I have to fit the exhaust then take it for an MOT and get it taxed so in all it's probably going to cost arount ÂŁ1200 to get the car to a decent state (it will sill have issues like it's tatty roof and some undesirable tyres but i can live with those)

I just don't know if it's worth spending ÂŁ1200 on it when i have seen other Fs for sale in what seems to be much better condition for as little as ÂŁ700, there is even a nice looking red 2001 stepspeed not far from me for ÂŁ800 with 8 months MOT left.

If i was a richer man then I would have no problem spending more than the car is worth to get it good again but since I only have what i get from selling the Rover 75 to fund it maybe i would be better off forgetting about it and buying another.

sorry for the long post, just needed share my dilemma with people who may understand

Anybody have any thoughts? (it has to be worth saying something if you read the whole post otherwise you have just wasted a huge chunk of your time :p )

Wow I got all the way to the end of your post lol.

I fully understand the emotional attachment, i feel the same about mine, i'd be broken hearted to have to part with her.

But on occasion I have had to think about the financial cost each time she goes wrong and mine is on the road and in half decent condition, and given the repairs etc you mention, and your pennies situation, I can understand how you feel.

I'm not much help, but I do understand, if i was in your position i'd seriously have to consider buying another, there comes a point where it's beyond financial repair, just my thoughts !!

buy another one,

strip yours and sell parts to rake back the cost. keep parts spare if you have the room that you may need in future ie hydrogas shperes ect. if the engine and gearbox is good, then thats a few 100 pounds already then you can strip off boot bonnet and doors, interirior (seats, dash ect) alloys

if you have the room and time a new car could really pay for itself.

once everything is removed, you can get a scrappy to lift the shell onto a truck and take it away, most do it for free as they get scrap money for it.

Tough choice. From my detached point of view it's simple. Get another one. Get what you can for the old one and start a new relationship.
I've been in similar situations with motorcycles that I've got attached to. On one I spent nearly ÂŁ2000 on a bike worth ÂŁ1250 and then just ran out of cash.
Seriously, Greengoblin, it is time to let go.

thanks for taking time to read all of that

I hadn't really thought of stripping it for parts as i had always wanted to sell it to somebody who would get it back to it's best again but having priced it all myself now i doubt anybody would be willing to spend what it needs.

The engine should be good, Russell made it as good as new a few months ago, if i had room i would keep it as a spare, doors, boot and bonnet are rust free but the rest is crumbling.

Would advertisng it on here for people to come take what they need be worth while (I'm not the best when it comes to cars but i do have a go at fixing things and have few tools so stripping it myself would be difficult/impossible )

I really do think it's time to let go but i can't help feeling bad about it after everything that people did to help me out with it. at least it has convinced me I need another F so i have a good excuse to meet all the great people from this forum ;)

I have found some interesting cars, i wish i had the money to buy one now :lol

I even found a nice looking 2003 TF 135 sprint in trophy blue, 88k with its belts and head gasket done about 18000 miles ago with a hard top for only ÂŁ1100 it was posted at the end of july though so is probably sold by now.

what about this

Buy a good solid car with a knackered engine for cheap, put my fine Russelled engine in that car and invite any members of .org to come take anything they want off my car for free (and a little help with the engine swap maybe ;) )?

how much am i likely to have to pay somebody to swap an engine? think that's something i should consider :)

Is this the one we all gave you money to fix? I can't remember, I gave someone a tenner sometime :dunno:

Mate, its a car, drive it, but don't hump it :dunno: If its uneconomical, just bin it and move on. A bit like a girlfriend that still dips you for cash but doesn't put out anymore. Its a pointless activity, clear it out, and get something new.

It was indeed and that's what has made me try to get everything sorted and get it back on the road, if money wasn't such a problem i would carry on too and spend what it needs to be a great car again, It's just that it's proving to be a very uneconomical.

It does make me feel a little sick that everybody did so much to get my car running again and I'm going to give up on it and strip it for parts, I tried a while ago to sell it as a project so at least somebody could get it good again but even though a few people were interested the cost of transporting it was prohibitive so i decided to sacrifice other things and try and get it done myself and have only now sat down and worked out all the costs and it's going to cost far much more than i can justify.

I won't have the money to do anything for a few weeks until i sell my Rover 75 so still have time to decide what to do but it's looking like this car is a lost cause. I hadn't originally planned on spending all the money i get from the sale of the rover on a car since i need other things for my flat but I decided those can wait, I don't have much these days so I promised myself I can at least have a nice car

how much is it going to cost?
fit the sub frame bolt yourself. then mot it, see what needs doing, then decide how much it'll cost to put right.
dont worry to much about the rust, just look at it as a job to be done in the future, when funds allow.
bumper = ÂŁ100
tires = ÂŁ200
ebay exhaust = ÂŁ70
alot cheaper than buying another. even if you only get another year out of her, youll still have 104 more chances to win the lotto

good luck whatever you decide

Why not MOT it? Costs less than ÂŁ50 - and if it fails and you don't want to fix it - at least you can sell it on saying "it needs x, y and z" to pass an MOT. Also, if the MOT station says it needs ÂŁ1k of work (plus the body work you already know about) - then you can break it with a clear concisions. You never know - it may surprise you and pass ;)
