Hi to everyone I've just joined the site as I may buy an MG ZR 1.4 5 door. You will all know they are very well priced at the moment. As a newcomer I'm just very aware of the demise of Rover/MG and wonder if the good price may be regrettable if problems develop without any support. The dealer offering the good price has gone over to Citroen/Mitsubishi (leave that for another day) and is selling his stock. I love the look of the car and since then I have read about their poor build quality? Oil use? etc, according to a few reviews but most owners seem pleased to own one. Is there any opinion from those who know on this site. I would be very pleased to hear what you have to say as I may be making a decision tommorrow (sunday) if your response is positive I await your responses.

To be truthful, the MGR cars are as just as good as any other manfacturer, and as such offer a very good drive for the money. yeah all cars from any manufacturer have problems, not just MGR, it is just the media that was to blame when it came to things like that..
Anyway as for the MGZR youve taken a shine to, what model is it?, What colour is it? and what engine size is it?.
I have myself a ZS180, and I have been smitten with it since I bought it just about 2 years now(in April), and I was very much a Ford nut and vowed I'd never buy a Rover albeit MG!, as soon as I seen the facelift model I had to have a shot of it, and once I did I bought on the spot.

last year in March I ordered an MGZR. but then all the trouble started with MGROVER. I never got my car because they went out of business. and there isn't a single day that I regret that I don't drive an MG.
I would say, just follow your hart. If you've been bitten by the MG bug, there is nothing you can do about it

hI KevG thanks for your response you've lifted my heart All I know at the moment is that its New 1390cc known as a 1.4 ZR and has a sport badge below the name, sorry I'm no expert. I'm going to see it in 1 hour to give my decision is there anything I should look out for or ask?. Apparently it has an independent 2 year warranty because of the demise of Rover

Yes been there as mate lives in Catton. Nice dealer. Have sold MG Rover for years. Will come back as a dealer if MG reappears - or so I was told when I called in once

I like the zr very much, I hope to get one. The 1.4 engine is very nippy for what it is, they dont burn oil, Infact they dont get many problems at all. The thing that will fail first is the head gasket, But dont let that put you of. If its mantained with all the cooling system working as it should, and you dont rev the engine over 3000rpm untill its warmed up (when its warm you can rev it how you like) then it will give many thousands of miles of troublefree motoring. I would buy the car sounds like a nice one. 5dr, red, I would go for it. How many miles has it on the clock?

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread it has been very helpful and I'm now on my way to discuss the finer details. I am much heartened by what I have found through this forum including this advice and comments I have found that parts are readilly available through Xparts so I'm not as worried as I was when I joined yesterday thanks to you all

The HGF problems found in the K series engines are not a common problem as reported in watchdog etc, just look after your car, that is the important thing to remember, yeah have fun, and drive the car dont be like Miss Daisy when doing so.
The 1.4 K is good nippy engine, but if you can effort it go for the 1.8VVC found in the 160, these engines also power the MGF/TF.

Hope you do the deal, parts these days arent an issue, and you will have dealer back warranty, for the major bits that may go wrong.

I've got a 5dr ZR 1.4, the 3dr looks more "sporty" I'll admit, but I prefer it, it's bigger and more practical, and when you are driving it it feels alot bigger than it is.

Only things to look out for as they mentioned with the engine, but also use the rear doors as much as you can, even if it means just opening them and shutting them sometimes, because like mine are at the moment they can go stiff.
