please, please can someone help ive just about come to quiting with this car,
its had the head gasket done its had a new cam belt done , took it for an mot and it failed on the brakes and co levels too high or somehing the guy says not a problem its just a case of plugging a machine in and talking to the ecu , but previously to this the car is driving like she has a breather pipe problem ,shes ok in 4th gear and your doing a bit of speed but in the lower gears shes pulling and juddering ,anyway do the brakes go to take it back to mot station and on the way she cuts out and dont want to start again , the garage guys just pass everything as its a rover scrap it :( ........ but im now running out of time because the tax has run out and i have nowhere to put the car and i can see DVLA coming to take it if i dont get it sorted asap, please can someone help or has anyone got any ideas what it may be before i end up losing my car

No idea what you mean by "a breather pipe problem."
If it was "juddering" it would suggest a misfire, so the first place to start is by going through all the ignition system. Start by checking to see if you have a good fat spark at each plug, then -
Clean everything inside and out, clean all the harness connectors, rotor and cap.
Replace the plugs, then the leads, then the cap/rotor.
The high CO reading is probably something like a temperature sensor problem.

hiya just about to go and get new ignition leads, spark plugs etc etc and though whilst im there ill check the price etc for new temp sensor ... does anyone know how i remove the old one to put the new one on is it the brown sensor that fixes to the engine or just the plug that goes on the wiring lume thing that i replace ? thanx for your help :)

ok success cars starting and the juddering has stopped once again it turnt out to be the rotar arm this is the second time this has happened to me (previous rover did the same thing) i know why didnt it cross my mind to check the rotar arm ? wll because i watched it get put on about 4 weeks ago and didnt think it would or could wear down so quick , is there any chance that could of affected the co levels in any way at all ? also ive looked on my old rover engine and just to see how easy it is tried to take the temp sensor off of it ... but its not budging for love nor money ...is there a certain way or nack to doing this im booked back into the mot station at 4pm today (please keep your fingers crossed for me) and preferably i would like to change the sensor before going ti try and illiminate any chances of a failed mot, providing all goes well at the mot station and i can get taxed and ticketed today i will have a rover 416 sli (96 N reg) k series engine that i have plans to strip for parts as she failed the mot on welding (sad cos the car runs sound otherwise) but i will come back on and let you all know about that later on today so if anyone needs parts its possible i may be able to help you , also i do have a few spare parts from a previous rover i stripped IE: lights front and rear... clutch master and slave cylinder... interior (standard other than drivers seat moves up and down as well as forwards and backwards) thanks for all your help though , i can finally start feeling abit more relaxed and optimistic :D

There have been loads of posts on the Forum about repeat rotor arm failures. I think there must be a bad batch around. If it fails again, try to replace it with a genuine part.

To remove the sensor, all I can suggest is soaking it with penetrating oil (not WD40) for 24 hours and perhaps trying when the engine is hot - don't take it right out or you'll scald yourself!

A month or so agao i changed my rotor arm, bought the part from Part-co and it failed after two weeks while driving and then wouldn't restart. The AA guy got one from Lucas and it fired into life first turn of the key.

Definitely a dodgy batch circulating around somewhere. My lesson learnt here was to buy a decent make of parts next time.

ok..so i didnt manage to change the temp sensor before going to the garage but the car drives to the garage lovely she was smooth ,and you could feel she wanted to give it some welly, then as im pulling out of the garage it stalled and wouldnt restart, so ended up being towed home again, im doing the temp sensor tomorrow but is there anything else i should change at the same time and its still not passing the mot (little effort on the back brake or something) im seriously banging my head against the wall now :(

Regarding the back brakes, try getting someone to check if the pipes are bulging or if there is a leak not allowing the pressure to maintain. I believe this can cause reduced braking on the rear. I'm sure someone will be a long to either confirm or alter my statement.

Hiya ..Already had the brake pipes changed before taking it back, but the guy keeps on going on about the pedal going to the floor or something , also did the front ones and changed the front disk as he said the one on there was warped, now hes saying it must be the hub, to be honest im getting so pee-d off i took my car to him today at 12 oclock this afternoon as he said he would look at the brakes and sort them so i can get my mot its now 19.50 pm the garage is shut, the car is still there and has not been touched, all i want is a god damn mot, but all i ever get from the garage is its a rover, waste of money , scrap it , and we have a serious lack of good reliable garages and mechanics in ramsgate area

Me thinks you need to take you car to a different garage!

If the brake pedal is going to the floor could well be the master cylinder thats at fault or you have air in the system somewhere - try rebleeding the system.
