Rover 214 8v - rattling

Hi,

I've had my S reg 214 for a couple of months now and it's started to get a bit of a rattle. It usually rattles for about 10 or 20 seconds after I start it up, but now it's started doing it while I'm driving and I'm thinking it could be something that needs fixing.

It sounds like the tappets, but I really don't know too much about engines, so I was hoping for a little advice.

I took it out for a drive the other day and it rattled for the whole 10 miles or so. The rattling gets faster as the revs increase, sometimes it seems to be louder than other times.

I've got another problem as well, which could be related, although it may well just be a 'feature' of the car. Sometimes when I accelerate, usually when just pulling away, but sometimes in second gear as well, the car just doesn't pick up properly. It'll accelerate, but no-where as quickly as it should. The temptation is always to put my foot down more, which just seems to make it worse, so I've found if I come off the accelerator and then back on, it picks up fine. It seems to do it sometimes if I'm in second and need to put my foot down, it's almost like it's not happy with me putting my foot down too much.

It's a manual gearbox, done 58000 miles

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Really I need to know what it's likely to be so I can go to the dealer who sold it to me, with my fingers crossed, and get it fixed under the 3 month warranty I'm meant to have. If I've got a fair idea what's wrong it could be harder for him to fob me off.

From sitting inside the car it sounds quite high up in the engine, although to be honest I haven't opened the bonnet and had a listen. I'll have a listen under the bonnet in the morning.

Now I'm thinking about it, there are other hings which could be relevant, or could just be features of the car.

Firstly, the car seems to give out a lot of exhaust, its not blue/grey, but quite white, I notice it a lot more when it's cold in the mornings, but even when then car has done a good few miles it's there. I only really notice it because I occasionally see exhaust coming past me and clearly see it in my mirrors, none of the cars around me seem to give off anywhere near that much.

Secondly it ticks over a bit fast, when it's cold it stays at about 950, but when warm it's about 1100. In traffic I can pull away, then stop and it ticks over at about 1500, sometimes for a good 20 or 30 seconds before it goes back to 1100.

There is definitely something wrong somewhere as an ECU will only idle the engine above 1k rpm if its dropped into limp home mode.

To find out where the noise is coming from (and it'll work if there's a chainsaw in the background...) get a foot length of garden hose and stick one end in your ear and probe around with the other end - this is a good trick because you can only hear noise from where the end of the hose is.

Find out where the noise is coming from and we'll be able to pinpoint what's causing the noise. It could be that you've got gunked up injectors - which causes em to clatter!
