Rover 200 revving/accelerating on its own!!

After problems yesterday with steam pouring out expansion tank, my wife has just phoned to say she is stuck at the side of the M8 again with the same problem but with another added bonus.

She says that the car was revving up and accelerating without her foot on the accelerator. She had to keep foot on brake to stop car running into back of cars. Why she didn't put it into neutral i don't know...

Car's a 2000 V Rover 200 1.6ie Automatic.

AA's on the way (Just joined on the 1st!!)

Any ideas what could be causing the acceleration issue? Getting a new expansion bootle cap today to see if we can stop the coolant loss.

Cheers

Putting the car in neutral would have probably over-revved the engine as it would have a lot less resistance. The alternative would be to switch off the engine and coast to the side of the road, but I know from experience that the steering becomes incredibly stiff when the engine isn't running due to the resistance offered by the power steering fluid.

I would also say a sticky throttle body causing the revving.

Thanks for replies. I would hazard a guess that when she says "ploughing" into the back of cars she means "i nearly grazed a bumper". So does sound like maybe the throttle body. Not too dear a fix to try anyway by the sounds of it.

As for the coolant, it happened on Monday as well. Little or no water in system and pouring out the expansion cap. No sign of any water ingress in engine. Nothing obvious on dipstick or oil cap anyway. HGF went around 40K ago so hoping its not that again. Got a new cap today so try that first.

AA guy said fan fuse had blown but not sure if faulty fan caused it to blow but seems to be OK for now. Managed to get to work anyway.

same thing happend to my 214 a week after i got it, i was reversing out my drive i then put it into 1st and the revs went straight up and i nearly crashed it into a parked car! I took it back to the garrage and they got it fixed as it was under warranty and they said it was the ecu causing it.
