rover 200 engine noise

Hi, I have a 99 rover 200 1.6 , ive noticed recently my engine sounds quite rough in idle, but when i put the clutch down the rough sound stops. Is this normal? or is there anything I can do to fix the problem?

Correct me if im wrong. But isnt it thrust bearing if noise is present on clutch depression AND main bearings if noise clears on clutch depression?

Be nice if it is. I have the same nose on my 220 Coupe turbo.

Well a thrust bearing is cheaper than a new gearbox (the only other possibilty)...replace with three piece clutch assembly clutch plate,diaphragm and thrust bearing .........then see what happens.
worn thrust bearings often rattle on idle.......and make a whining noise ..and sometimes a shriek when clutch pedal is depressed.

Disagree mate. I would say input shaft bearing on gearbox. Defo not clutch release bearing.
