Rover 200 Boot won't Lock

Good day all.

I'm in a bit of trouble with my Rover 200.

Over the past few months, I have found that at times, when closing the boot, I can "lift" it up and it will open, some times there is a bit of risistance some times there is none. I have always resolved this by closing it with a bit more gusto :)

However, a few days ago, I have suddenly found that it just will not close properly, resulting in me driving along and the boot warning light starts to flicker a bit.

As far as I can tell all other locks are working fine. I THINK it has some thing to do with the latch inside not closing properly, allowing it to be lifted with eas. I have tried using some WD40 on the lock, just in case it was sticking, but with little joy.

Has any one else found this problem? And more importantly, how easy would it be to replace the boot locking mechignism?

Time is a bit of an issue, I am meant to be driving to Belgum on the 29th (

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Well I have it working, with a bit of effort (more to do with me locking my self out of home and clambering through a window to get back in!), and a lost screwdriver set (I have NO idea where I put it down).

What did I have to do?

Well, I pulled off the black covering plaster to look at the inards of the catch mechignism, and realised there wasn't that much to go wrong, I tried spraying it with WD40 and wiggling it to get the oil in every where, but the improvement in movement was negligable and no closer to it actually locking.

Ashy, I couldn't see any thing that that I could alter with regards to the bolts, I don't know if my design is different from ones you have expearience with, however the only two bolts were on the outside holding it in place, all of the inards were riveted (or some thing similar).

With some more work, I realised that if I fully extend the cable, that the hammer moves freely enough, suggesting that the problem was related to a sticking cable.

I could not see how to get the black cover from behind the boot which covers all of the inards of the windscreen wiper etc, off. So I resolved my self to hoping that spraying the wd40 in to the lock, and then repeatedly moving the cable back and forth would get the WD40 in and around the area enough to loosen it up, and hay presto it worked :)

I noted that some one said I should greese it all up to make sure it stayed fixed, i will do that with the catch mechignism, but can any one tell me how to get the large black cover off, so that I can grease the lock?

Thanks for the quick posts, and I hope with this post, and the previous one that got me on the right track it will help some one else.

The catch isn't on the tail gate it's on the rim of the boot itself, the bit that the lock latches on to.
The cover has a few screws and then needs pulling off with a bit of force as it's held on with clips too.
