Replacing the Symphony Headunit - some q's

My initial goal was to add an iPod interface to my factory-fitted Symphony head unit (complete with 6-disc changer) in my 2002 Rover 75 Connoisseur CDT; putting up with what I’d personally describe as the ‘adequate’ system overall. However on further investigation into the costing of various options, along with the true interfacing nature of this solutions (or lack of!), I’ve decided to go down (only just) slightly more expensive route of a new ‘iPod ready’ head unit.

For those at all interested, I’ve decided to go for an Alpine Unit – either the CDA-9847R or CDA-9855R (both complete with the KCA-420i iPod module). The former of the two can currently be purchased from Halfords for just less than £200 including free installation (or online for around the £180 mark). Seems a worthwhile investment to me, especially as even for the cheapest iPod solution didn’t give me much change out of £100.

Relating to this upgrade I have a number of questions I’m hoping some of you Rover-all-knowing people may be able to answer:

Dash fit: I’ll obviously need a 1 DIN facia to fill the void removing the Symphony unit will leave (which looked around 2 DIN). There seems to be two variants (or perhaps even more) mentioned – either what is effectively a big piece of plastic with a single DIN in the centre (which can be procured from many places) or what to me is more desirable an original MG Rover part (or replica of) which has the single DIN and makes use of the add ional space with a storage compartment. This seems to be harder to get hold of – Rimmer Bros have offered me the following two part #’s (both needed apparently): FJV001100PMA & FJV001110PMA at £7 each; can anyone confirm these to be correct or point me in the correct direction?

ISO wiring: My new aftermarket Alpine head unit will have the standard ISO connection. What will I find plugged into my current Symphony unit? I’m expecting either an ISO connection (ideally!), a BMW proprietary connection or a Rover proprietary connection. Also, if it is one of the latter two is the necessary converter readily available (Halfords etc) or is this another Rover-specific part I’ll have to order?

Steering wheel remote: I wish to keep the functionality of the factory-fit steering wheel remote, and the new Alpine unit is specifically lists compatibility with the majority of factory-fit remotes as a feature. Will I need some sort of conversation connection here (bearing in mind the Symphony is an Alpine unit and the new unit is also an Alpine unit)?

6-disc changer: I also wish to retain the use of the factory fit 6-disc changer, which I’m led to believe is an Alpine unit. Will this have the standard changer bus lead coming out of it and therefore connect straight up to the new Alpine unit, or again will there be some necessary converting required?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any assistance on some/all of the above.

Well I'm sure we'll get some knowledgable relplies soon... :)

In the meantime I've done some further investigation myself with regards to the facias required/desired. The part #'s I quoted above gets you the following:

Image

It cetainly looks promising, although it does say it is "for Siemens". I'm guessing that this is because a Siemens unit was a recommended replacment for the stock unit, providing these parts were also purchased for correct fitting; and not due to the Siemens unit having any specific sizinf etc. I've ordered one (at <£20 I figured it was worth the risk!) so I'll let you know how I get on... fingers crossed.

This 2 part facia will not allow a standard after market DIN CD player to fit, I have one at the moment because I have a Siemens Vdo Mp3 player.

The facia you wont is a single part not 2 parts, I had one previously for a Clarion CD player cost was about £14 form dealers.

Thanks for the info.

So the single part I want, does that give me a similar looking result (1 DIN with a storage tray above/below it)? Or is it something just like this:

That part you've put the link to is really naff. The slot is off to one side so looks unbalanced and the plastic quality is not good.

The genuine MGR single part has a tray above and rubber mat so gives you the look you want.

There have been previous posts about this part. Try a search for fascia plate or fascia finisher.

Mike :)

ps if you are still looking for the Symphony pin outs and plug configuration then pm me an email address. I might be able to find you a list.

Hi Mike,

I agree entirely, which is why I want to make sure I get hold of the correct one and not the one in the link.

I have searched through the posts - honest! (and again for good measure!) -the best I can come up with is http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=97758. Now this provides a pic of what I'm after, along with an eBay link (provided by you) to the part I'm after (though now sold). Certainly a good start, however the final bit of the jigsaw is still missing.... a part # and where it can be sourced from.

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

The single part facia that I has was more curved
Again I think that facia was just for the IOVOX range - allthough I could be wrong
Hi there - a very helpful source has now provided me with two alternative part #'s for a single-piece fascia; with the only trouble being I now have no pictures to go with them. I'm fairly certain that one is for the one linked in the previous thread and the other the more curved on you have posted a pic of. If it is purely a cosmetic choice (ie. both the same size) then I'd prefer the curvier one.

The two part #'s suggest one is related to 'Kenwood' and one to 'IOVOX'... based on your previous comment would you like to hazard a guess as to which is which (ie. which one to order for the curvier option!)??

Cheers!

I have the curvier item on my ZT and this had the Kenwood Stereo in it as original equipment. I have now changed it for a Sony unit and it has fitted just fine.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,
I have 3 variations of the stereo trims.
FJV000480PUY Finisher-Kenwood (the curvy one series one)
FJV000670PUY Finisher-Iovox (the flat one series two)
FJV001110PMA Bezel surround - Siemens (the inset one series two)2part
FJV001100PMA Inner frame - Siemens 2part
The offset one from Autoleads (expensive and nasty)
The Kenwood, Iovox and the Autoleads ones are standard iso fit (i.e any normal headunit from Pioneer, Sony,Kenwood, JVC etc) The Siemens i'm not so sure they will fit!
Prices £-ish
Autoleads £20.00 Half***s
Kenwood £12.00 MGR
Iovox £12.00 MGR
Siemens £????? MGR
Caution e-bay prices can be high for MGR ones
H t h
Cheers

Update

Hi all. Just thought I'd post a quick update to the above...

Managed to complete the uninstall & install in under three hours - very simple to do and pretty much all is well!

Some notes:

1. My 2002 Rover 75 CDT SE Conn. had the 2 x ISO connectors as well as the custom Symphony connector. So the two ISOs obviously went straight into the back of my new Alpine 9855R with the other custom one not used.

2. I bought my new head unit (complete with iPod interface) from eBay for what I considered a good deal, and when it arrived yesterday I was very impatient to fit it! I've been informed that the desired facia is out-of-stock and not to hold my breath, so I went out and bought the nasty-looking Autoleads one (which is more expensive at £20!). Will do for now, but doesn't look the best so will be replaced as and when the oem part is back in stock.

3. For some reason the Alpine 9855RR has both the instrument panel dimmer/illumination and telephone mute on separate cables from the ISO power/control plug; where-as obviously on the R75 loom they are built into the ISO power/control plug. Bit of a pain, looks like I've have to run a little wire of the back of the loom-side plug into the one from the head unit connector. Not a show-stopper, just a pain it isn't populated in the head units ISO plug.

4. Have put the iPod interface on the flap the folds down to get the the fuse box, and fed the iPod cable into the glove box via the hole for the CD changer. I decided to remove the changer as it seemed a non-starter in getting it to work the the head unit, plus do I really need the changer and an iPod (the head unit takes a single cd)? Also, I actually quite like have a glove box back now!

5. Further to the above, I now know where the fuse box is (have only had the R75 for a month!). Removing the glove box and working in/around that area certainly would have been easier (in hindsight) had I known that the plastic flap thing comes down - guess you live and learn!

6. Steering wheel controls not working at the moment, unsurprisingly as they are not connected. I obviously need an interface to take the feed from the above described power/control ISO plug (two feeds looking at the wiring diagram for the R75 loom) into the head units remote control socket. Only trouble is I'm having difficulty tracking down exactly which interface this is, most suppliers only list an option for R75's with the BMW-type connector. Luckily my local Car Audio dealer has said he's happy to order in a number of different options on a "sale or return" basis and is confident we'll get there eventually.

Hope this info is of some use to others maybe considering something similar.

Also, for those interested, my originally-fitter head unit and CD changer can now be found on eBay:

It's a jungle out there!

Today I settled the deal with my local MGR dealer and next week a Trophy Blue MG ZT 190 will take my Rover 25's place!

The ZT comes with the Symphony stereo unit, together with the CD changer in the glove compartment, but I will not settle with that. Instead I will build a new system, exchanging the Symphony unit and the CD changer with my JVC KD-SH909R that has served me very well the past two years in the R25. I will also change door speakers, build a subwoofer and add a couple of amplifiers.

But.....

It seems like a jungle when you are trying to find the right adaptors to fit a new stereo set to a 75 or ZT...!

I need a new fascia adaptor.
I might need (?) an ISO adaptor lead.
I want the steering wheel controls to work with my JVC unit.

And this where the jungle really starts to grow! I have read thread after thread, all related to these kinds of matters but there seems to be no easy answers to my questions, and when I ask car stereo specialists in Sweden they hardly know there's a car make called MG!

The ZT in question is a 2003 year model. Has anyone out there managed to succesfully put a JVC unit in the place of a Symphony unit, getting it to work with the rest of the car, i.e. with the steering controls functioning with the stereo!?

Also, are the MGR fascia adaptors easy to get hold of? I am looking for the nice looking one with the little compartment above the stereo. What are the differences between the three (!) versions on offer?

FJV000480PUY Finisher-Kenwood (the curvy one series one)
FJV000670PUY Finisher-Iovox (the flat one series two)
FJV001110PMA Bezel surround - Siemens (the inset one series two)2part
FJV001100PMA Inner frame - Siemens 2part

Would a standard DIN stereo like my JVC fit in any of them? All three? And will they all fit into my forthcoming ZT?

Lastly, what kind of ISO cabling loom can I expect when I remove the Symphony? A BMW one which will need an adaptor or will my JVC just plug and play?

Anyone...?
