Repeatedly blowing fuse MGF

Everytime i indicate right i am blowing the fuse for my power steering, dash etc. I can indicate left ok but there seems to be a connnection between steering and indicating that causes the fuse to blow.I have no idea why!Sometimes if car is stationary with steering wheel in a neutral position i can use the indicator but never when driving. This just happened the other day - is it going to be expensive?!

Cheers

David

Sounds like some sort of short on the RH indicator curcuit.

Have you got a multimeter?

You say that it does not do it when the wheel is straight ahead, this could mean there is an issue with the switch, or the wiring for the indicator around the steering column is shorting on something metal - steering column perhaps?

Have you checked the fuse layout? Is the EPAS system on the same fuse as the turn signals?

The EPAS has it's own 40A fuse, one of those big ones, like the smaller ones but much bigger, the indicator fuse is fuse 1, 10A in the passenger compartment fuse box. If the 40A EPAS fuse has not blown the fault is probably that the dash light for the EPAS only comes on. Paul

Is the 40A fuse for the EPAS motor? Is there any way the EPAS ECU is on fuse 1?

Know of anything else that is on fuse 1? Dash illumination maybe? He said the dash lights go out when it happens?

check the boot wiring loom where it meets the main loom at the nearside boot hinge, wires are known to break and short there, but it can be difficult to locate the break.
I looked at mine about a year ago an found that the insulation had gone brittle in most of the loom. The OP has probably got the same and a short is happening back there across a number of circuits - brake lights, heated rear windscreen, etc. It's the first place I would look.

No problem. OP = original poster. The person who started the thread.

Looking back over it, I have realised that I totally mised the fact we're talking about an F. My advice was to do with a 200/25 and I apologise for any confusion.

Still, the same thing is true even if the car is different. Look for shorts in areas of the loom that are exposed to the elements. Specifically, where body panels meet and the cables are chanelled through rubber conduits.

solved?

David, did you solve this? My right indicator on my MGF 1.8 also blows a fuse under my dashboard which then shorts my indicators, temperature gauge and rev gauge. When the immobiliser kicks in a further fuse then blows in the bonnet. Pretty inconvenient, all things considered.

Not sure this is one I can fix myself, so aside from any tips, any knowledge of a mobile auto-electrician in East London would also be appreciated!

my solution

I didn't have time to wait for answer before trying to get this solved. Got a pickup to take it to an auto-electrician this morning.

I'm told that the indicator relay was sticking, which was causing various bits and pieces to short. Various bits and pieces needing replacing and wires needing re-soldering.

Total cost: ÂŁ60 for pickup, ÂŁ217.50 for diagnostic, service and parts
