Policeman With Speed Gun

I'm sure this question has been asked time and time again however I would just like to satisfy myself.

Was driving home from work about 15 mins ago and came across two traffic police standing at the side of the road with their speed gun. It was a 30 zone where they were standing and a couple of yards further on were 40 signs. There were several other cars doing the same or greater speed than me, I was in the mid 30s, and nobody was pulled over.

Now it's my understanding that you get some sort of leeway and that if it's a speed gun it's not taking a photograph of you so you have to be pulled over there and then. Am I right in thinking this.

Also the speedometer on a ZR, and most cars, should over estimate the actual speed just to give you a safety barrier.

Would just like to know if I can expect something in the post or if the matter is dead and buried as I was not pulled over at the time of the incident.

Regards

I got busted last month by a van with a camera, and I got the option of doing the AA Drivetech course for doing 36 in a 30.

A couple months before that, my wife got zapped by a guy with a gun, and she got a letter through a week later essentially saying "you're a bad girl, we're having a clamp down in this area, tut tut tut".

Could go either way bud.

As far as I know the handheld cameras dont take a picture only record the speeds. This is the reason there are normally more than one police officers there. One having charge of the gun the other to log how many speeders or to pull them over when the gun indicates a speed breaker.Round my way normally there is a couple with the gun then just down the road a pull in point that they gt you in to give you a ticket or a warning

Thank you for your quick responses.

Well I hope it goes the good way but now I will have to be worried waiting far a letter to arrive in the post. Dies the letter have to arrive within a certain period of time?

Well if the policeman next to the guy with the gun was writing down registration plates he would have a hard time with the amount of cars over the limit. There was a taxi and a Golf in front of me and an ambulance next to me in the other lane. However if they are going to single anyone out I expect it would be me. Or do you mean that the other guy might have just been recording the number of speeders at that point so they know to come back later?

Hopefully all goes well. Could do without 3 points as I'm wanting to buy a diesel ZR. Insurance would be a lot more difficult.

I will try not to worry but I am a worrier so I won't be satisfied until I know I got off with it.

Thanks again

I'll be surprised if the Ambulance got a second look.

Remember, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. ;)

10 percent leeway for your speedo,as that is what they generally underread.....

if you were not stopped staright away or down the road a little then you may get away with it tho all the officer has to do is record your reg and type of vehicle to then send you a N.I.P (notice of intended prosecution)through the post to you within 14 days...

in the circumstances described however,i would suspect you are ok.....

If its 10% on the speedo I should be ok. As I said just a worrier and wanted peace of mind.

Well if they have to record the details of the car they will probably say its a Rover rather than an MG. I could always nit pick.

Yeah if I get caught it will be my own stupid fault. However there are bigger crimes that get ignored so hopefully I will be ok.

Thanks for all of your responses and help.

It is generally thought that the general rule of thumb is the speed limit + 10% + 2mph, though this is not absolute and the limit may be more closely enforced depending on other circumstances.

An officer with a handheld gun will have to stop you to either caution you or issue an FPN (in general they are there to encourage drivers to slow down rather than issue fines, so you would be likely to be stopped an cautioned unless doing significantly more than the limit.

Speedos will over read, but the amount by which they do so will vary from car to car (even between the same make and model) due to different wheel/tyre sizes, tyre wear, and even different makes of the same sized tyre.

Well the general consensus appears to be that I should hopefully get away with it. However the next 14 days will be a worry. Another thing I read was that it could have been a data gun. However I would have thought that would have had to read your number plate in order to get tax, MOT, insurance details.

If I see that brown letter in the post I will have to get in touch with you about that book. Dont want a nasty surprise in prison. If its a heavy book you could beat people away with it if they try any funny business.

Thanks again for all the responses

If it was a speed gun they could of just been speed monitoring (when complaints of speeders come in from residents just to see what speeds are going on) if they were going to fine you it would of been there and then

The mobile ANPR Machine looks like a giant laptop with a large camera that can be sucker mounted to the car or flat surface. If it was one of those you only need worry if your paperwork was not in order (Tax etc).

None of the above record anything other than hand written note by an officer, fines are on the spot, now the camera vans record video so can do you after the event.

If you were driving recklessly you can be summoned without being stopped or if you were seen driving in a antisocial manner you can be issued with a Sec 59 warning after the event without being stopped.

Hope it helps :p

Well there are no houses on that stretch of road, just a bus depot, gas works, tyre centre and the entrence to the port, so dont think it would have been a complaint from residends. It is a fairly bad junction during the day with HGVs crossing 4 lanes of traffic to get into the port but at 2230 not exactly that busy.

Well my impression was that if anything was going to happen it would be a there and then incident. So hopefully I will be ok. Asked someone at my works father, who is traffic police, to tell me what the script was. He said I should be fine unless the policeman was very jobsworth.

Well there would have been no wreckless or anti-social driving going on as my ZR is on its last legs. It over-heats at motorway speeds and sounds terrible any other time. New engine or ZR TD time me thinks. If they say I was driving at excessive speed I will just demonstrate that excessive speed leads to explosions.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully all will be well.

Thank

I've never heard of anybody actually being prosecuted after being caught by a mobile camera unless it's been a case of flashing blues and twos and a fixed penalty ticket. Like steven_norfield said, they may send a letter to the registered owner giving them a bit of a telling off. If you were to be stubborn, without a photo they'd struggle to prove you were driving. I wouldn't worry if I were you.
