Extra lugs?!

Hi all,
Thought I'd do a nice easy job by fitting the chrome trim ring I got before Christmas.
Dismantled the new one, which came with the plastic outer seal and allen bolts, drew several sketches to make sure everything went back in the right order. Then set about dismantling my existing filler cap
It turns out that, in addition to the three wide retaining lugs attaching the lock mechanism to the metal outer ring, which feature in the 'how to' above, there are three smaller, more fiddly, more springy retaining lugs, presumably a later 'improvement' to the original design.
If anyone has succeeded in replacing the trim ring on a later fuel cap, how did they manage to remove the original trim ring?

I asked this last year. IIRC the three additional lugs are actually sprung the other way to the three main clips. It's not that it's not designed to come apart: he later cap is designed not to come apart. I suspect it will take a number of thin, small, strong tools to hold the clips, but I'm going to wait for warmer weather.

Warden, thank you for your response.
Have you actually succeeded in dismantling your petrol cap? I get the idea that it would help to be an octopus to stand any chance of getting this job done! Was considering filing the three additional small lugs off as they seem so solid and immovable.

Replace my petrol cap ring with a new chrome one after a lot of !,,,,!! managed to get it apart used 4 electrical screwdrivers inserted to release the clips to get apart. I also had problems getting it back together as it only fits one way, but once done looks great the price bit steep
