After sorting out little problems to stepper gearbox problems, mot, tax etc ready for a summer of fun I then started to give my MGF little treats. New badges, clean, polish new rear window. Lots and lots of attention.
I then began planning to do up the wheels just needed to decide on a colour, new stereo even maybe a nose job to give her a TF front.

Today, did'nt feel right, did,nt sound right, not bleeding right. Died on the way to work and managed to roll into a side road. Water in oil, no water in expansion bottle, brown crappy mayo all over.

A repair priced at an Xpart garage new gasket, belt, water pump ÂŁ600 total. Not bad I think but its just more cash going in.

Would you

Sell as is and walk
Repair then sell
Repair and give it a bloody good talking to

Im gutted, it still looked nice even on the back of the pick up truck which incidently is the best miles per ÂŁ it has ever done.

Just happened to me matey. I'd get it sorted, run it for a year till the cost of repair is a distant memory, then sell. That's my plan anyway. All plans mods have been halted now. good luck in whatever you decide.

keep it, fix it and give it a good talking to :D lol... i'm the wife of Dave who's been recommended on this thread, he does hg replacements for ÂŁ295.00 plus fuel including cambelt and waterpump or ÂŁ325.00 for the vvc including both cambelts and waterpump (see link in my signature if you're interested) x

I bought my car with HGF. It got fixed under warranty but I missed 3 weeks of scorching weather with it. Once fixed with an MLS gasket you'll have alot more peace of mind. The three mobile HGF specialists on here are highly recommended by everyone who has used them. Jon Norris is one of them and due to him just starting up is not too busy at the minute. He knows our cars like the back of his hand mate. If you get in touch with him I'm sure he'll get you back on the road in no time and will be alot cheaper than ÂŁ600.

If your heart is with it 'C', should be a great drive after sorting the HG out.
If heart not with it....sell on....best way for you...........

Well I appreciate all of the comments, to be honest C is the way to go as I do like to potter around and come to the forum and look around for ideas and what others are doing.
Just getting some prices and want it done and back on the road.
In my mind I am counter balancing the cost, I was going to have the system flushed from an earlier HGF ( before me) I was going to get the belt changes as I dont know if it has been done.
Its a bit like my wife saving money on the shoes because she got the dress discounted.!!

You guys are all so committed (or should be committed :twak2: )
It must be hard after you shower your mg with love and more cash then it turns round and kicks your butt, it's teasing you, pushing you to see how far you will go, what pathetic amount of money can replace owning one of these little minxes?

Go on, you know you love it, treat it to a mls and give it a freakin good talking to, I know I would

you own an MG for the love not because its sensible

i've been through this just recently.....should i sell or repair.

i bought mine for 2k and have spent as much on repairs/maintenance.

in the 18 months i owned the car i have done the following....

cam belt
water pump
head gasket
rear calipers
coolant pipes
reverse light switch
repaired 3rd brake light wiring
oil/filter change
gearbox oil change
air filter change
low coolant alarm
tracking(twice)
tyres all round
battery

plus i think it will require discs/pads all round before long not to mention the stiff clutch and starting problems i've had.

i just reasoned that i'd spent too much on it already to sell it on now especially as it's not worth a great deal.

i'd look at how much you are going to have to spend on it to keep it up to a good standard.

these cars are cheap to buy and by todays standards probably cheap to fix but sadly always seem to need fixing.

l love mine but i wouldn't have another unless it was a brand new one with a warranty.

someone once told me its a british sports car....they always go wrong but thats why we love them!

a lot of that is service type stuff any car would need one day

we all have these little hiccups from time to time, I'm going thro a bad patch of nearly two months with mine, you just have to soldier on and do what's right.
I'd recommend dave for your hg replacement, he's recently done mine and his service is second too none.I'm from hartlepool and he only charged ÂŁ50 for fuel, you can't get fairer than that. Steve m

Going through owning an MGF problems mostly seem to be stock faults, well documented and gone over time time again. Thde hgf is a problem of duff parts a few years ago that seem to be failing now. I am confident the MLS will sort my current hicup then enjoy the drive.
I had a quick look around at TF's and they also seem to have the same areas of weakness. What car doesnt.
To be fair I had a discovery same age and 4000 mls on the clock, HGF same duff gaskets.
Looking on the bright side Im getting the wheels off and spraying them up while laid up.

Glad your going for option C :) and using one of the mobile mechanics on here. :)

Like some other MGers on here We're stupid enough to have 2 as well, and they are both our main cars, I'm finding it hard to remember the last time thye both worked at the same time, the love keeps fading but soon returns the minute we get them back on the road, until your patience completely runs out ( and i'm getting near ) go for C and enjoy the summer :)
