Hi all, first of all may I apologise if this has already been answered on here and I havnt yet come across it, i have been searching for a couple of days now & cant find an answer!

I have an 02 TF 160 and have been having some real problems with the coolant system. I first noticed cold air through the heaters + slow rise in temp, however as soon as I take it over 4500 revs the heaters start to work and the temp reduces to the norm.

I originally thought it may be a leak or air in there so I followed CJJ's excellent 'how to fill & bleed the coolant system' on here and it doesnt seem to have made any difference.

A good friend of mine yesterday suggested the usual HGF however I work in Northern Ireland and managed to get it from Lisburn to Belfast and then from Liverpool to Stoke on Trent - all at over 4000 revs, which on Friday in the snow was fun, 65 in 3rd gear all the way, scary but fun, which I doubt very much I would have made if it was HGF. Took it to the shops today and exactly the same symptoms, very frustrating!

Has anyone any suggestions or been in a similar situation?

Hi Steve,

It takes around 5 mins for the temp guage to start to rise - bit longer at the min! Then the heaters blow cold untill I take it over 4000, then returns to cold again, this also is whats happens with the engine temp, in reverse - obviously!

Lee - please excuse the noob - I'll get my head into the rules asap - good work on the Friends round London run - good to see MG owners raising funds for the best charity there is!

Hi aidi, rebleed as before, with the heater on hot but the blower not switched on, once bled feel the pipes running backwards from the radiator under the car, keep the car running at slightly raised revs until these pipes start to get warm this means the thermostat has opened, rebleed then, but if the pipes start getting slightly warmer almost straight away after the first bleed it will indicate your thermostat is open or partially open. So the car will struggle to get up to temperature.

Cheers for the advice guys, ended up taking it to a garage who came well recommended from my Dad, he found the pipe with the bleed screw just above the gearbox was expanding indicating a block, thought it must be the thermostat, replaced it and still exactly the same symptoms. Looks like Im gonna be motorless for a few weeks yet....... :(
