Hi guys, I`ve got a 1.8 VVC MGF and bought it as spares/repairs due to engine issue!
Aparantely its had a recent cam fitted (unsure if this is a new cambelt or a camshaft) and now when trying to start it, it just spins over and it is bending number 3 and 4 plugs!!
It won`t start.
I`m assuming whoever has done this job hasn`t done it correctly!!
Has anyone had the same issues?
Could do with a bit of advice before I break it up into spares!!
cheers guys

Bending spark plugs or the valves?

OP doesn't say to what extent the plugs are bending, could just be the earth tang. Iv'e been having a lot of trouble running the MGB lately until I found a plug with a closed gap. I seem to remember dropping it onto the garage floor when I checked the timing - They are easily bent and it could be an overlength plug has been fitted.

If you are getting clattering on turning the engine over together with bending the plug tips, I would suggest that there is something else in the cylinders sandwiched between the piston head and the plug. Broken valves perhaps. Sounds that you will have to remove the head to investigate or get some sort of camera in there. Usual precautions when taking the head off - lock cams, dont move crank or you will lift the liners etc.

Best of luck with it

The other option for the chatter could be a fubared bottom end. If the big end bearing is completely gone the piston will rise up that little bit more and could come up enough to hit the bottom of the plug.

As has been said though, many people will be interested in what it actually is, it's better than the soaps!

Right then!!...I think I have `maybe` found the cause of the problem but I think I might just need a bit of clarification :) NOT!! :)

Pics with the head off!!
(Obviously this is what happens when you get someone to put new belts on and they don`t time it up correctly)!!!...not me or by me but the previous owner. They must have got some monkey who thought he knew what he was doing putting new cambelt/VVC belts on.....oops a daisy :)

1 of the valves was stuck in pot 3 and the other 2 were in pot 4....maybe this could give me the answer as to why spark plugs 3 and 4 were bending at the tip and that it wouldn`t start up?

BIG OUCH! Impressive damage that.

My TF160 came with a broken cambelt but damage was only some bent valves and no damage to head or pistons. Whew! Must have been very low engine revs when it went.

One day I'll get it back together!:dunno: But I'm not in a hurry, it's supposed to be a hobby car. (Actually just got to reassemble the head and put it back on and then slip the engine back in the subframe/car.)
