Mgf ticking noise when accelerating

I’ve just bought a hill climb mgf 1996 1.8vvc and when you accelerate there is a loud ticking similar to tappet noise, it also does it a little when changing down gear. I’ve driven it a few miles and nothing has changed. Any ideas when the problem is likely to be?

If you prove it’s that mate you can either try to change the mechs for a second hand pair (bit of a lottery because the second hand mech could do the same or be worse) or you could go all out if looking for performance and get a vvc blanking kit and change to solid cams instead of vvc cams which some people do , or if you can live with it just let it be and enjoy it for what it is , I have to admit looking at videos on here it can be rather irritating and makes it sound like a diesel engine

Check timings correct on both belt, also check condition of belts to ensure no teeth missing. had a 135 which had ticking noise got louder when accellerating, turned out teeth on timing belt were missing making the belt slip causing timing to be out.

If it sounds like a tapper(s), it might be.

I would start easy, by getting the engine really warm - say with a 20 mile drive.

Then dump the engine oil and change the filter.

Repeat the above again, and then see what you have.
