MG ZS180 MPG, am I just dreaming or what?

I know this comes up frequently but I'm thinking of doing something silly and would like some more specific advice:

I'd love to own an MG ZS180, but I do about 110 miles each weekday - all a fairly straight run at a steady 60mph (my current R25 does this returning mid-forties MPG).

To make it work financially I'd need to get around 350 miles from a full tank (cap. 55 litres) - that is to say I'd like to fill up every three days and leave 20 miles and around 2 litres left as a safety!

This is 30.0mpg.

Is this possible? If your granny was driving, could she do it?

I know careful, slow driving isn't the point of a ZS180 but the plan is that excitement is what weekends are for, not the daily commute :D
That's what I'll tell myself anyway!

The ideal and probably cheapest solution would be two cars, ZS180 and R25, but I don't have the space.

its deffinitely possible if you stick to 60mph fairly easily ,,i once did 315 miles and still had quarter tank left but in reality your never gonna do it consistently cause you just can't always go only 60 mph so either expect a higher fuel bill or forget it ,,,,,at a recent trackday i was using a 1/4 tank in about 15-20 mins which was about a litre a lap...To be honest id sooner have a cheaper car to run that cant go fast than a fast onne you darent use due to the fuel bill,,,how frustrating would that be?!!!
I find the 180 is a lot more economical at 60 than 70 ish as at 70ish in 5th its just sitting on were the power band starts.

Oooh, it's all looking good!

In fact, I already do. My R25 is no fast car (in fact it's the 84PS version) but it's more than capable of performing the commute as fast as I want it to. I did a 'brisk' run last week in fact, to see what the times were like, and was easily as quick as all the MR2s and M3s and everything else in your normal rush hour traffic.

The thing is that it really isn't any quicker to travel fast. I might save 5 or 10 minutes, but that's nothing for an hour+ in the car. Average speed is dictated by traffic levels and the size of queues at junctions and roundabouts.

The point isn't to get to work faster :)

I get 270 miles a tank with my wife at the wheel, but thats mostly town driving!
I find town driving makes a huge difference to economy. All I need is that little bit extra (well, 50 miles anyway).

I think I'll have to book a test drive :D

I get about 280 miles per tank, town and dual carriageway driving, I struggle to justify having the car sometimes ( mpg, insurance, tax etc) but then I drive it and don't care what it costs, its my one little luxury in life. :D
I get about 230 miles per tank. Most of my driving is done on lanes and fast A-roads with lots of roundabouts (yipeeee). If you grandpa it I reckon you could get over 300 miles per tank, but I am not that restrained!! As Steve says, if you want a cheap car, then forget it - it is not cheap (fuel, insurance, not to mention tyres - a set of decent front tyres is ÂŁ250 - ÂŁ300 every 8 - 10k) but worth every penny. I could spend all day driving mine and still not get bored.

Cut down on other things in your life to pay for the running costs (give up smoking, women etc) - at least the drive to work will be fun, and as for the weekends......

I've had a ZS180 since early 2003

The most miles per tank I managed to get while I was doing 110 miles a day, was 360. Usually averaged 335 miles a tank and the low petrol indicatory had just come on when I filled up with about 43 litres of petrol.

The best mpg I've got is 40 when I really tried. Usually averaged 30-35 while still managing to have fun driving. Worst i've had is 29mpg. Journey was a mainly motorway and dual carriageway with a short distance of town driving either end.

Hope that helps

Following on from Steve 180 comment. When doing alot of mileage and looking after your tyres, I managed to get 37400 miles from a full set (1st set) of Michelen Pilot Sport tyres.

So i'd say to nOw2, yes a ZS180 is a feasable commuting car and great fun when you don't care at the weekends.

I usually get around 250-270mpt (miles per tank) on Optimax, but thats with a lot of booting and fun on the A roads, using all of second and third gear etc. Plus overtaking everything I can find.

But saying that I just did over 100 miles with less than a quarter of a tank. This was due to mainly A1 driving (as in the road not the quality of the driver) with a couple of booting sections for when the Mondeo drivers tried it on.

If you do steady motorway driving you should see well over 300, but if you boot it a lot (and the engine loves you for it) then expect to see a lot less, also if you stop start on the motorway you won't see 300.

i have owned my zs 180 for three months now. to be honest i have been impressed with its fuel cons. i owned a 2.0 3dr focus zetec prior to the zs, which was pants on fuel, 280 mile to a full tank (which i think is the same size as the zs). first day i had the zs i drove form manchester to cardiff. i managed 325 miles to a tank and i wasnt hanging around!! i average about 270ish miles to a tank which i think is good given my style of driving! could probably get more, but wont be as much fun!

I've been tracking the fuel economy of my ZS180 since new, for almost three years, and keep an up-to-date chart on my website:

http://www.jonathanandbecky.org/mg/fuel_economy.png

It has got over 30mpg a few times, on long trips, but I've never had enough restraint to drive gently through a whole tank of fuel. So, I imagine it would be possible to do better than this.

This is all on regular unleaded; I'm going to switch to super unleaded soon and see if that makes any difference.

I have no idea what mine does mpg wise - I'm having too much fun listening to the noise! Seriously I have taken it from Southampton to Manchester (well Oldham really) when visitng the OH's folks (distance approx 250miles) and still have about 1/4 tank left. Town driving probably doesn't help economy, but if I wanted that I'd have a diesel anyway!!

OMG - you guys take it a bit seriously! That's a great chart though...

I too have tracked my fuel ecomonomy for the past 3 years from new and the best I have ever had is 32.7mpg and the worst 22.4 with an average 27.4mpg. Don't bother to try super unleaded - it just costs more. I have tried Sainsbury petrol but average mpg goes down to 25.6. I do about 70miles per day on mostly dual and motoway driving and at best got 320miles and at worst get about 240miles from a tankfull.

You've fogotten the diesel (stop sniggering at the back)...

A 115ps model, remapped or rechipped ecu, ITg filter, boost turned up to 19psi = 130bhp and 210lbs ft torque at 2300rpm.
(30-50 in 4th in 4.5" - thats quicker than a ZS180, and 50-70 in 5th in 7.4" - quicker too I think)

Imagine a Zs180 with it rev limited to 4500 - the diesel would leave it for dead. Not that there'd be much point in rev limiting it to 4500 - as you'd miss out on 50% of the performance1

On the other hand if you're happy to stick below 90, the diesel would surprise you!

I did a couple of charts comparing a KV6 190 and Superchipped 45 TDi - scroll down to the bottom of this page:-

http://45zs.info/Lseries/lseries.htm

300 miles on half a tank, and cheaper to insure, tax and run.....

On the other hand, if I didn't drive 1000miles/week, and only used it at weekends, I would have a ZS180 myself, modded to 200bhp.....

YES ,,VERY IMPRESSIVE but can it do the 1/4 mile in low 14.s at nearly 100mph?!!!:p
Not quite!
But it does surprise drivers of many more expensive motors..

19 psi ????,,,,,,is that safe ?that must be more than double the pressure of the standard system.:eek:uch:
The standard boost for the TDs is 1.2bar (about 17psi) so 2-3psi more doesn't cause a problem.

wow your jokin,,,,,,,i know my old 5 turbo was about 9 psi srandard so i thought that would be average,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but diesels do run much highjer pressures dont they.
I turned the boost up again at the weekend, now going off the end of my electronic gauge at 20psi.

I half expected the ecu to complain and cut the fuel, but so far it hasn't.

Its extremely lively now!
